Is it possible for a thread to go very far without people making snide comments and silly extreme ad homen attacks and characatures?

Sometimes I wonder.

Just a hint to everyone (on all sides) who do this. Typically it makes others feel that you have no real argument for your position and thus can only react emotionally.
