The US was colonized by persecuted Christians, but the over-riding goal was freedom from state-ponsored religion. At the time, it didn't necessarily mean much outside of a Christian context because it was a Christian culture. But the mechanisms were set down to help evolve past that.

We are not a Christian country, nor should we be. We are (or should be) a country where a diversity of beliefs are respected and tolerated.
