It is a Christian nation and was created to be one from the get go.

While I am a Christian many early founding fathers were theists or deists and didn't think much of Christianity. Clearly there was an intention of freedom from religion. While this nation is basically Christian, that comes from the fact that most Americans are Christian. Yet every religious group has contributed to the whole. We are definitely more than the sum of our parts and all faiths (and even atheists) are part of that whole.
