It's for the same reason more Brits get their news from tabloid newspapers than from any other source: sensationalizing makes things more interesting. No one is better at doing that than Rupert Murdoch.

Still, Americans consider CNN/U.S. a better source for news than Fox News. But since it isn't as interesting, they don't watch it as much as Fox. (And the networks still kill both of them in the ratings.)
