The problem is that most Americans are libertarians: socially liberal and economically conservative. Presidential candidates, save Clinton, tend to reach out to populists: socially conservative and economically liberal, since these people are more likely to (swing) vote.

Even after defining people in one of many ways, you still aren't finished. Most Americans may be libertarians, but they certainly aren't libertarian enough to vote for Libertarian candidates. Some government regulation is a good thing.

Defining people politically isn't as easy as the talk show hosts claim it is.
