I'm not so sure I agree with the quote. As far as I can see, only the things we are meant to buy but don't need require advertising. Food (in general) doesn't need advertising (although specific brands or types do) because we truly need it. We don't have to have our awareness of food raised. We know we need food inately, as without it we would die. No matter how good a product you don't need is, though, without advertising pushing it, you'd never want it.

Aren't there any CEOs on this board, ready to come to the defense of corporations?
