The whole point of the ipod is that it fits in your pocket, have fun toting a firewire drive around. The small size is what makes it worth it. Have you seen those "pocket drives"? They cost much more than a normal firewire drive due to their size.
Basically, it all depends on what you want to do with your device. If you just want music in the car the xm radio sounds like a good deal. Once you start wanting to listen to it on your home stereo or on a seperate boombox you have to add $80 and $100 respectively, to the price of the system.
So $130 for the receiever, $80 more to listen in your car, $80 more to listen on your home stereo, and $100 more if you want a "portable" boombox. Sounds like $390 to me (and that's without the subscription), and still it is not nearly as flexible as an ipod.
So, if music in the car is all you want then go with xm. But if you'd rather be able to be flexible with how you use your device, and use it for reasons other than music alone, get an ipod.
