Todays TV tuners have the same tuner brick as my 1985 Betamax. Why can't they miniaturize it?

They've had TV Tuner cards since the 1990 - I remember reading in MacUser of a MacTV card - a tuner on a NuBus card. - they didn't sell too many so they were discontinued. Apple used to include TV Tuners with the Performas.
I don't know if you can still buy TV Tuner cards - these days it seems USB based devices like eyeTV are all that are available.
I don't think you understand. I am talking about TV RF tuners, not the baseband NTSC processors. The latter ones have been miniaturized, the RF tuners are still the same size as they were in 1985.

doesn't look like they were able to fit it all on a pcmcia card.
edited: the mpeg capture card is available separately. The tuner is sorta just an add-on thingy...but, hey, at least it isn't a yukky USB interface.

You can't get much smaller than this:

I rather drop a cardbus card to the PowerBook than external solution. If the price is right with good software package, I would jump to the PowerBook world again.
I wish. A nice solution would be one that has a mini dongle for svideo/av/cable input and then without the dongle be able to tune into over-the-air channels (and am/fm!)
That would be a nice device, and definately possible these days. Something like that would get me buying a pb15 in no time
