The drive would have to be a slot-loader to avoid the clunk-factor, but I do not imagine vertical orientation being in any way good for Superdrive DVD burning.

When Jobs introduced the iMac2, he discussed vertical drives and said that they wanted to avoid that because the drives run slower. So, I sincerely doubt that they would release a machine with a vertically oriented optical drive unless that issue could be completely resolved.

Supercrac[k] - I think you need to get a reality check. Apple are not going to release a new G3 desktop. Period. It is reasonable for them to continue using the G3 in consumer portables including perhaps some kind of tablet, if they ever decide to do that. But it ain't coming back in a desktop.
