The G5s have one less optical drive mount, 2 fewer hard drive mounts, and 1 fewer PCI than the G4.
I was talking about the Powermac G4. There have been more than a couple of revisions to the G4, so lets review.
MDD : 2 optical drive mounts, 4 hard drive mounts, 1 AGP, 4 PCI.
Quicksilver/Digital Audio : 1 optical drive mount, 1 zip drive mount, 4 hard drive mounts, 1 AGP, 4 PCI.
Sawtooth/Yikes/Gigabit : 1 optical drive, 1 zip drive, 3 hard drive, 1 AGP, 3 PCI.
All of the G4s use the same El Capitan enclosure with the plastic handles and the swing down side. Yours is one of those, neh?
Apple used alot of heavy plastics and a heavy frame to make the G4... partly because of aesthetics, and mainly for ease of reach to components. On top of that, they realized that their customers, especially in digital video, want lots of room to grow internally. With 250GB ATA drives and maybe another ATA controller, the late model G4 (in fact all of the G4s) can have a total internal storage of 1 TB. That's a spicy meat ball.
4 hard drive mounts set the G4 apart from most PCs you'd care to compare it to. Sadly, the G5 is a step back from that with only enough space for 500 GB of serial ata drives... a quirk.
