PC Game Console, Just wild curiosity
I was wondering if it was possible for someone to make a console that was intended to hook up to a display to play all these 3D games without needing to run windoze. You know, really fast processor, awesome graphics card, some kind of OS for the games to run on and really good input devices. I mean I read how many mac users have a 'gaming pc', but you don't need that whole Windoze thing to run a PC game, do you? If it is possilbe, you'd have accelerated hardware without the hardware you just don't need and of course no WinOS, that surely would being down the price, right?

First of all, what you would have would be a complete PC. Even if it would look like a console it would still be a Windows-PC.
Second, I don't see how this is related to PowerMacs so I'm moving it to the lounge.

The final kicker is that Windows is a negligible cost.
(a) It's subsidised (Dell)
(b) It's not included (home-built, cheap Wal-mart)
(c) You don't want it (Linux)
(d) You have unlimited free licenses (either piracy or Academic Alliance or something)
So what you really want is a Windows machine, without the negiligible cost of Windows, and called a gaming machine so the companies can charge more and use an even more proprietary, DRMed OS with none of the advantages of Windows (e.g. networking stack, DirectX, peripheral support).

HA! Looks like Archos is showing one at CES. Runs PC games on your TV and will cost $399. You never actually see window, runs scripts or something for every game. Just saw it on ScreenSavers.

So, it's a $399 Windows PC without a monitor, without the flexibility and cost-effectiveness of a 'real' PC, and none of the efficiencies of a console.
You do get the ability to run PC games, but I fail to see the advantages over just getting a PC or an Xbox.

As a Mac user, it is very appealing. The Mac is not known for it's gaming after all. It was just a thought to begin with, I was surprised someone else thought so enough as to build one for the masses.
