Team Twin Towers' "World Trade Center II" [jpeg]

MacNN Troubleshooting 50 posts Jul 7, 2004 to Jul 8, 2004
While I'm not too crazy about their design's harsh, almost skeletal facade (the recessed windows look like sunken eye sockets as opposed to Yama's sleek, ultramodern mullions), I prefer Team Twin Towers' resurrected twins to the rather effete Freedom Tower.

The original:

Nice idea, but hasn't the design for the FT been approved already?

Personally, I'd rather have something like the original towers.

Yeah, ranks up there with 'Freedom Fries'
What would make it "free" compared to say... the empire state building?
I remember gravitating toward the twin tower design that was incredibly tall, built out of triangles. It said to me "Knock 'em down? We'll build them taller."

I'd love to see this put up but they've already laid the cornerstone for the Freedom Tower. Was that thing named by Bush? Sounds like it.

Haha, my school cafeteria switched to "Freedom Fries", then after about a week, it was changed to "Long slender fried 'taters".

Patriotic names are always cheesy.
Esp to those who hate America.

Like "Old Glory"?

Maybe... but I'm just a cynic.

You don't have to hate America to realize that "Freedom Fries" is incredibly stupid and reminiscent of WWI anti-German propaganda. At least we were at war with the Germans when we did that, though!

There's a difference between hating America and not lapping up every single thing that America does like a puppy dog.

Back on topic: I agree that resurrecting the Twin Towers would be better than Freedom Tower. It says: hell, you knocked them down, we'll just put them right back up! Screw you, Osama.

Team Twin Towers thinks cornerstones don't mean a thing.
Meh! The original design wasn't to hot, those just look like a pastiche of them.
The bold silver vertical stripes hid the 1000's of tiny (in relation to the size of the tower) windows, which made them look 'unique'. This design just looks like any 'tall' office block
e.g here's Canary Wharf tower in London.

Agreed. Though personally, I would rebuild them both one floor higher than before and put a memorial on the new top floor of each one. Seems like a fitting tribute to the victims, as well as another "screw-you" to Osama: you knocked them down, so we'll rebuild them even higher.

There's also the fact that I'd take into account new building materials. The original design of the towers was actually quite good, and because of it they stayed up much longer than anyone could reasonably have hoped for given what they were hit with. Many lives were saved because they held out as long as they did. New materials could keep them up even longer should another attack on this scale happen, and even more lives could be saved.

You do realize the original poster is American, right?
I guess that makes him a self-hater, huh?!?

I think "Freedom Tower" is a cheesy name, whether it is applied to
the planned building or a rebuilt WTC.

::goes off to lash himself for his self-loathing tendencies::

(Edited to add: Millenium's got the right idea. Rebuild the tower's taller, stronger, with better safety features.
Personally, I'd vote for calling them the "F*** You, Osama!" towers. But that's just me.)
The FYO Center.

I like that.

Although the subtle layers of irony of calling it "Freedom Tower" are hard to beat and certainly have a far higher appeal to anti-American tendencies.

One reason why I think it's almost as lame as the French Fries embarrassment.

Tying in with the 1776 feet height, I think "Liberty Tower" would have been fine.

"Freedom" is over-used by your government, and obviously not well understood.

Interesting, but where were they when proposals were going out?

But that's the problem: there's nothing else to this design, besides the aggressive grid. I don't think building these buildings would be a good idea, and especially not with the wannabe Richard Meier marina buildings at the base.

As someone else posted, it just looks like yet-another-office block. That's not progress.

Yeah, how about Fuk Al-Qaeda Tower ?

That's more upfront...

P.S. Peter, please spare me the timeline, I know the pic's old...

With a term like "Freedom Fries" America is the one being racist.

Uhm, is Freedom a race ?

How about "Redneck Fries"
That's take care of the racist tone...

Do these plans call for surface-to-air missiles on the top?
Just to keep it on the pseudo-humoristic side, I'm sure this one is also rather old:

Without the airplanes, anyway, that design wasn't all that bad...
Yeah, because we all know that there will be another airplane attack...

Let me apologize on his behalf.

I'm sure he just forgot that under your current management, policy is that the term "French fries" has never existed. It is, in fact, an American dish, has always been an American dish, and the name is therefore devoid of any exocultural reference and always has been devoid of any exocultural reference (as if there were any "culture" in the land of towel-heads, terrorists/sympathisers, Eco-Nazis, communist-socialists, and anti-Americans).

Vive le "Freedom"!

They don't have "humor" in Canada?

That explains Alanis, at least.

They should really be called: "If you don't agree with us like the French didn't then we come up with Anti-French terms like Freedom Fries"

Mais oui! She was on our #1 kids comedy show, "You Can't Do That On Television."

I was referring to the handful of Yanks who are scared to death of putting up big office towers under the assumption that another airplane attack will happen in the exact manner as before.
Don't see what hate has to do with anything, or why that always has to be brought up. That response always smacks of insecurity to me. Either way, cheeseball is cheeseball, and "Freedom Tower" certainly qualifies in my book, just like freedom fries, etc.

IMO, in the end, it is that kind of misuse of the word which trivializes it.

Yeah, I know I was being redundant, but I got me feathers ruffled about the hate bullsh*t.

This is my point:
That kind of pettiness should result in the name "Redneck fries".

Anyone want to pick a fight ?

You're just another self-loathing American.
