The point is that these buttons do not give tactile feedback and require your eyes to manipulate them as opposed to just using your hands. Fitt's law come to mind?Look, I've recognized that the buttons look "kewl" and all, they just aren't that intuitive. Hence, a step back in usability.
And mind you, I've tried using both layouts. A lot.
