I think I understand what you're saying, but in general usage, 'whore' isn't a gender-neutral term. I suppose that's why people are getting riled by the usage.

It's easy for me to say (with a distance of several thousand miles from the news story) but, like some of the posters have already said, we don't know the full story. And calling some a 'whore' is a pretty significant value judgement on someone that none of us know...

That's without even getting into the whole gender politics of the word itself...
