I don't have a G5 yet, but I hope to within the year.
The main thing which kept me away from the was reliability, many more G5 PSUs, boards, and processors cooked themselves to de…
Nope, it doesn't have graphing calculator installed. Once I can get my PC and my 540c to play nice, though, I'll see if I can find a utility to tell me what processor is installed.…

As I suspected, the G4 (Sonnet Crescendo G4 800/1M) was only running at 450MHz, but after running the Sonnet enabler scrounged from another machine it now runs at 800. Much nicer,…

I've been replacing the 1/2 AA batteries with a two AA or two AAA battery holder held on with either double sided foam tape or hard locking tape for ages, like so:

Where did you get the 10 pack from?
I leave batteries in the units I use once in a while, but anything put into long term storage has the battery removed.
Do you have Graphing Calculator installed? If so, it will give an error when you open it on a 68k Mac. "Sorry, Requires Power Macintosh" or something to that effect.

System Profiler is notorious for miscomputing CPU speeds for third-party cards. I'd run Metronome (you can download it from Sonnet) to get the card's actual speed.

Here's a link to a site still selling the replacement cases.
$449 is certainly an optimistic starting price on that auction. *shrug* People are funny enough that I wouldn't bet ag…
Wow! That's a good price!
Do you leave all of your systems setup and plugged in? If not, I wouldn't bother leaving a battery in them anyway. I've lost several computers to expl…
Since I needed a bunch I decided to go with a bulk purchase and managed to find 10 packs for $28 shipped. Nearly every beige Powermac and Quadra I have thinks it's 1956. 8-o
When I put the 1ghz G4 in my 7500 it wouldn't power up at first. It's a good thing I got an instruction manual because in the manual it says when you remove the old CPU you have to…
When I first tried to power it up the PS would only click and the PS fan would make a feeble attempt to run. Thought I had been screwed with a DOA, but after some head scratching …
Can you temporarily install an internal ethernet network card and see if that will establish a connection online? If it does work, chances are it could be the ethernet port on the…
Hi, me again.
We have a Quicksilver G4 at my school, and I've recently set it up as a browsing machine. If I'm correct, its a 933 MHz Model with 128 MB RAM, not 100% sure on the H…

Picked up a 9600 G4/800 today, 512 MB Ram, a 4 GB SCSI drive and a 10 GB IDE drive driven off an IDE/USB/Firewire card. Radeon 7000 Video card and the usual floppy and CD drives. …

It may have been a universal install; it appears as if the people who installed the software were from Tiger Foods. :?: They could have just made a universal set of floppies. If…

I believe 7.5.3 has Apple System Profiler. Run that and see what it says for processor.
It's very likely that the install was a "Universal" install for any system. Of course, it…

Hello all,
I recently acquired a PowerBook 540c. So far, I'm very happy with it, blah blah and blah. Anyways, as I was snooping around the System Folder, I noticed something: a Po…

In every instance since the late 1980s, CPUs are faster than memory, which is why the CPU speed is decoupled from memory speed. But using one clock base to drive memory and CPU jus…
The processor card is what determines the system bus speed.

That's backward, isn't it? The system has to be in-time, and that's given by a master oscillator …
