I tried using my current IP address instead of "localhost" or "127.0.0.1" and that didn't help. My current workaround is to use Adium instead of iChat.

Yup, call apple and get them to send you a new one. I had my second one bust on me a week ago. Both mice scroll wheels break scrolling in one direction after a few months.

Try cleaning the scroll-ball with a microfiber cloth, or slightly dampened paper towel. Did the trick for me.
