I had the 14 version and it did the exact same thing about 5 years after having it. Was a bother, but when it came back randomly it was like, "wow so beautiful".

I was looking there, but some of these upgrades are hard to come by and pretty expensive. I do have a PSU that will work, i have most of the case as well.
Any markings or writing on the cards could be useful in determining what function they serve.
I'd remove the cover from the case then leave the computer in a window or other area …

That makes me guess that somewhere in the PRAM is 18 bits for the total uptime count, which gets incremented every 10 minutes.
