Use the iPod Software Updater to Restore (reformat) the iPod. If you do that and it still does not work, it's not going to be easy to fix.

I am afraid after several attempts, the iPod is not longer able to play music. Now I have a 10G external HD LOL.

If the hard drive works, then it should be fine. Take it to an Apple store and have *them* restore it.
