In 10.4 and 10.5 there is a VNC server built in. Go to system prefs, Sharing, and I believe you can enable it in the options for Apple Remote Desktop.

If you choose to format, you should also "zero all data" for a better format. I believe that this process maps out any new bad blocks that have appeared on the disk.
