Try changing the MTU from 1500 to 1492. You will find this setting in your Network pref panel under Ethernet. (Change Automatic to Manual first).

As far as I know MP3s should play just fine. It only seems to be AACs that are somewhat... funky. If the AAC file isn't encoded by iTunes, it may not play properly.
