Have you tried restoring (a.k.a. erasing) your iPod using the iPod updater?

thanks for replying ive downloaded both the pc and mac version of the updater (pc on pc, mac on mac). from my mac, i can "see" it in itunes, and i have dragged a few songs to it. …

assuming the menu on yours is the same as my first-generation, from the main menu choose: 設定　＞　言語　＞　English -r.
