Ideally you can hold the play and menu buttons, but you might need to plug it into the AC adapter before doing that. PLugging it in helped me for really tough freezes.

My nephews iPod mini just did this. Anyone know why it freezes? Is Apple aware of the problem? Firmware Fixes?
