PowerBooks! — #13

The PB 170's HD is actually a 1 GB IDE HD connected to a IDE-SCSI bridge. TBH, I hadn't thought of that, haha. Thanks!

I don't want to have her dealing with configuring SheepShaver, if you know what I mean. Click to expand... Okay, I'll buy that

Pull the HD, stick it in a PC and reformat. Viruses = gone. Unless it takes a SCSI HD. Lowendmac was not to clear on this.

Would they run in SheepShaver, perhaps? It just seems unfortunate to have to run between two laptops ...

AFAIK OS X. She just needs to run apps that won't run in Classic. I gave her my PB 170 (the one I have now), but after a while, I decided that I really want it back, and she could…

Thanks Byrd for the valuable advice! I didn't know about the possibility of the CPU card becoming unseated; I thought it would stay a tight fit. And I'm actually intending for the…

Great finds. See if you can get a G3 for the 1400 -- it makes it a totally different animal. Although my 1400+G3/333 still feels slower than my 300MHz blueberryBook, it still runs …

Chances are that PB170 has a poorly-seated CPU daughtercard; reseating it (or shimming it slightly to enable a better fit) usually gives it life. Either that, or pull the battery …

Options for replacing an early Li-Ion main battery — #8

I have a 2hr battery, so do not need a replacement just now. 2 years from now, maybe. This latest post was made purely with a view to the possibility of experimentation on a dead b…

Options for replacing an early Li-Ion main battery — #6

This evening I read with some surprise that the cousin of the 2400c, the 3400c, can use and charge the battery from a PB 190/ 5300, which is, of course, a NiMh battery rather than …

Holy of Holies -- Quadra 840AV! — #2

Nice score - welcome to the club! Can't say I've ever heard of an 840AV that didn't come with a CD drive, unless the blanking plate is wrong. I picked up a very sick 840AV a coup…

G4 refuses to boot OS 9.1 CD — #5

G4 refuses to boot OS 9.1 CD — #4

OS 9 came out before that PowerMac though. So it's possible that the G4 either has a specially compiled version of the Finder/System, or there is an enabler (going back to the old…
