It's definitely not his fault. Scratches are usually lines. His is chipping. Dropping the machine would only dent it. The paint is most definitely defective.

I got a 256M upgrade from 1-800-memory and it was 2-2-2 and works perfectly in my Pismo. WhenI bought it 3 months ago they were way lower than anybody else at $189.
Avoid cheap RAM. It is often unreliable. This causes more crashes than anything else.
I have had good experiences with Micron RAM. The price is low and the quality is incredible.
