In case you didn't know, ctrl + mouse click will give you a right click. It feels awkward at first but eventually you'll do it second nature.

so I guess just the external mouse and keyboard can wake it up closed?

Yes. And you need to do the Bluetooth Firmware Update in order for Bluetooth devices to be able to wake up your PB from sleep.
