No version of OSX needs OS 9.2.2. You boot off of the OSX install CD and then depending on your needs you select a type of install, e.g., clean, upgrade, archive and install, etc.…
Yeah, OS X doesn't need OS 9. You need to have OS 9 installed to run Classic (which allows you to run old OS 9 apps), but OS X works just fine on its own.
