I'll third it for the MPEGstreamclip solution FFMpegX is shareware and worth paying for if you are using it a lot. I've you've got Toast6+ you can extract .dv files with that

I tried Handbrake to create an Ipod Video movie and was very impressed with how easy it can rip a DVD. You can do it all in one step, very sweet.
