If you go to your local newspaper print centre they will give you the end of the paper reel. They will go through dozens of reels each day. Just cut the paper to size.

Go to an art store and buy a newsprint sketchpad and cut it to size.

For single-window apps you can command-click the zoom button to have it fill the entire screen. Other than that, I don't know. If you don't like clutter, you can always hide stuff.
