The eMate is a great machine for its intended uses. Accept none of the usual insults regarding your new toy.
I have fiddled with several of these over the past months, and while m…
Thanks, Rodus! That website seems to be *the* Newton place -- I'll be spending a lot of time there, I see (assuming that I resurrect this unit).
As for surfing, I've got my expect…
Panther runs fine on 512mb RAM (the system holds about 128 at idle). As with any machine, the faster the CPU, the better. At least a 400 for decent speed and FireWire capabilities.…
I've found Newtscape to be the best with NetHopper a very close second, a word of warning though, surfing on an eMate is going to be slooooow. It's slow on my 2000 which has a 162…
It sure does -- many thanks, ChristTrekker. Have you tried any of these? I'm up for a certain amount of experimentation, but I'd also like to benefit from the collective wisdom of …
X.3.9 Panther IMHO, its overheads are less then Tiger and you still get most of the functionality. Just make sure you've taken the RAM up to 1GB.
I'm assuming here that you mean …
Yes g4's exist for Nubus, a slow one not worth bothering with (240Mhz?). Any apps that would make use of a G4 would choke on a Nubus machine.
If you already have the CPU then stic…
to coiusI also note that you are running a stock machine no upgrades
mine has sonnet/encore st/G4 1.8Ghz CPU and 1GB memory
and there in lies my problem, nothing seems to work be…
if it still doesnt work, you should try the atx power supply hack. although it might just be safer to get your hands on something like a quicksilver or some g4 with a bigger power…
how did you get it to work in panther? I am having a mess of trouble with it and i have the same exact drive and a newer video card.... Also, I tried the os 9 patch with no avail…
what i did was get a Radeon 7000 Mac edition and a Pioneer DVR-110D and all was good, in OS 9.2.2 with the hacked DVD player on http://www.os9forever.com/

I tore down the eMac for the vital parts last night, hard disk, RAM and optical drive. Of course I made sure the eMac was still f…
The Lombard is up and running again and seems to be cooler even with the original 400mhz processor. The only issue I have with it is that FireFox 3 will not run-Opera was installe…
Get some DVD player hardware (for example: the Plextor DVD burner 708A works great, region free firmware is available also, and the G3 will boot and install from this drive). Then …
A little patience and this was the solution :b&w:
Newton now back in action.
Thank you all very much.

Choose an iMac with USB, and then get any of many USB/serial adapters. Keyspan springs readily to mind, and they have been at it since at least 1998. The adapters fetch up to USD…
I was happy with Panther on a CRT iMac for quite a time after the appearance of Tiger, but the change to Tiger was prompted by its greater Web security. Tiger's 'stealth mode' and…
I copied the ROM image from my 68k Performa. Does anyone know how to get the QuickSliver machine running off that, or if that's even what I need to do. Thanks to everyone who has r…
I'd stick with Panther on a G3 for optimal performance. Tiger is more compatible but more memory and processor intensive. I'd only use it if you had a program that required it.
