I spotted a Apple property tag on this Macintosh SE SuperDrive.

Would this necessarily mean that it was a late stage testing prototype perhaps? Thanks!

Nope. Most likely given it is labeled "SuperDrive" it was merely a computer Apple used internally, probably on a secretary's desk. The SE FDHD came first and except for the label change no internal difference whatsoever as far as I'm aware.
