SE/30 Boots from External HD But Not Internal

I have an SE/30 that refuses to boot from the internal drive. I have a 1GB HD that is loaded with System 6.0.8 (SE/30 specific files) that will boot fine when placed in an external HD enclosure, but refuses to boot when placed inside the SE/30. All I can guess at this point is that the internal SCSI port is bad. Does that make sense? Could it need some kind of termination on the HD itself?

It does need termination someplace. If the internal drive isn't terminated, then it won't work. You can test this by terminating the SCSI buss with an external drive, or even an empty drive enclosure as long as it supplies termination and term. power. If the internal drive shows up, termination is your problem. The internal and external ports are on the same buss, so you need to terminate the internal drive and the last external device (if any) in the SCSI chain. Enabling termination on drives varies a lot from installing jumpers to installing resistor packs to who knows what.

I was thinking that maybe the Bourns network filter tied in with the internal and external SCSI ports cound be the issue. You could try either removing the filter or replacing with a new one to see if it fixes the problem. Of course, if you remove the filter, it will make the external SCSI port disabled, so be aware.

If I have something plugged into the external SCSI port (say a CD drive) that is terminated do I need to also terminate the internal drive? It's an old IBM deskstar (I think) drive. I see jumpers for SCSI ID but nothing for termination.

It's an IBM DPES 31080. Apparently it doesn't do BUS or SCSI termination. Would hooking up an external drive with an terminator fix my issue or do they both have to terminated? I guess I can always use it in the external case, but it tends to be LOUD.

Ok got the HD to terminate and everything works. I have to use my .5GB drives, but that's more than I'll ever need (1GB was overkill).
