WOOT WOOT, we just got our 3rd SUV

Yup, the flat bed delivered it today.

Its a 1957 WIllys jeep that my dad won at an auction. As of right now its DOA as the gas tank has a nasty crack on it. but she turns over and fires for a bit with some either. It has a 6 foot fisher plow and a f'ing bad ass winch that is driven off of the rear drive shaft, talk about handy. Its a 3 speed, and with the winch it has 4 shifters, one for drive gears, one for the transfer case, one for 4wd low and high, and once for the winch. only 35K miles on her, but thats an aufl lot of driveways. It has and F head engine in it that puts out a whopping 74 HP and 111 ft lbs, but the best thing its you get that 111 ft lbs at around 2100 RPMs.

Our goal it to get her tip top running, toss some new tires on her add some lights to the front and back for night time plowing. Hopefully we can get a nice functional bad ass plow vehicle for under 1000 bucks. So far we have paid 600, 500 for the auction and 100 to have it towed. I will post some pics when I get my digital camera back.

its like that but a lot rougher shape.

oh the other SUVs that we have are a 76 International Scout, with a soft top used only for enjoyment, got a little 304 with a 3 spd auto, and our 2000 Bravada that we use mostly to tow our boat and snowmobiles mostly during the winter.
So collectively, you're getting...what, about 5MPG?
Uh.

Congratulations?

Yes. Yes, that's it.
I'll donate the gas....
that is absolutely baddass!. dang I miss my Jeep. '76 CJ-5
I can hear mother nature wheezing!
the bravada is an SUV.

i would think it just about insulting to call a jeep an SUV. especially an old school willys.
Calm down, guys; it looks like the original poster actually has legitimate uses for his SUVs. Two of them, at ant rate. He mentioned the one that he uses to tow snowmobiles, and it looks like this new one has a plow on it; both are certainly legitimate uses.

The soft-top one, though, now that's another issue. Is there any legitimate use for an SUV where a soft top wouldn't be a safety hazard?

If you can get it running, good on ya. Those things were built like tanks.
Why the third "for fun"-SUV? Wouldn't pouring gas directly into the drinking water give you just as much pleasure

same here. Had it back in highschool. Chicks dig Jeeps.

mine was 'firecracker red' with blue & white stripes. (1976 = US Bicentennial year)

What is it with people and bashing SUV's? I'm with you if you were ranting about H2's and Escalades, but this is strictly utilitarian. It has freakin plow for petes sake. Besides, the money made for plowing driveways will more than pay for the gas!
Old Jeeps are nearly as cool as old Land Rovers.
Good on you.

my grand parents went in with us on buying it. we store it over the winter and use it at their cottage maybe once a week to go out on the dirt roads late at night to look for moose and explore abandon roads, so yeah it has no real use but at least its not a daily driver.

and that jeep is just a little 4 banger that tops out at 45 mph on flat ground, i imagine it doesn't get that bad for milage but we will be working it so who knows.

I think that the Scout, if I recall, has a pretty substantial roll-bar underneath the soft-top, although I'm not sure. But even if not, The old LR Defender had a removable hardtop, did it not? You don't have to roll it to be 4-wheelin'!

Hey, these are some classics (obv. not the Bravada). As gas-guzzling SUV owners go, this is pretty mellow. He's not some urban hard-on with one of those Tahoe-on-Steroid H2 Hummers -- you know, the ones where you get a photo dossier of the 3 US soldiers who'll die to keep your year's supply of gas cheap. And, by buying and restoring old vehicles, he's not filling the coffers of the thoughtless (at best) SUV manufacturers...

Hell, the old Willys probably gets better mileage than most modern SUVs. And whoever said it is right -- the Jeep is no "SUV." Its a Jeep, by god!

A majority of Internet users, at the current time, IIRC.

Many of us prefer not to have our browser windows take up the entire width of the screen.

Because people in non-commie countries have vehicle based hobbies? Like off-roading for the sake of it.

You mean cold, not cool, surely. I've seen the heaters on those Series IIs...

Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain! (It's only Joe McCarthy or Sweet Dick Cheney...or oh-so-hot Ann Coulter, if you're really lucky.)

I was bashing the "for fun"-part of it, not the fact that he owned SUVs that he had a perfectly valid reason for owning.

Can't we all get along? . This should be a great summer project before the winter gets to you.

I hope you have fun snow plowing your driveway. I wish I had a snow plow for my driveway.

Congratulations on your SUV.
