Paintball last weekend, Kristin is ****ing l33t.

I went paintballing this last weekend, myself armed with my trusty 10shot semi auto pistol, and Kristin borrowing a gun from someone. Holy CRAP. She got the flag 2 times outta 5 games, and was always one of the last ones still in. Myself , not so hot. Having only 10 shots before I have to reload, I can't really rely on the 'suppressing fire' or 'spray and prey' tactics, so I was pinned down quite a bit reloading CO2 or ammo. Oh well. Was still a blast, but it's cool to learn new things about someone that completley surprise you.

heh, nice one, dude!
Yeah, doesn't it feel nice to know your wife is good with a gun?
What do you have? a PGP? Good to see another macnn'er who is into PB.

i agree, the more pb'ers the better. i picked up a smart parts impulse with nitrogen a few months ago. i love it . what kind of marker do you have? rec ball or tourney??

and cash, what possessed you to walk onto an actual pb field with a 10 shot pistol?! last time i played i shot off nearly 1000 rounds... can't imagine doing that 10 at a time.
I took my 10 year old brother to play paintball a few weeks ago, and he loved it. I was worried he would be afraid of getting shot and cower in bunkers but he had no fear and played aggressively. He ended up shooting out several tournament-level players there over the course of the day.

I am a casual player and usually play a few times a summer. I have thought for a while about getting a paintball gun but I simply cannot justify the cost. The field at which I play has a $15 rental package including marker, goggles, field pass, 100 balls, and free gas fills for the day. A field pass is $5, 100 balls is about $4 (when bought in bulk) and gas fill-ups are few dollars apiece. So it ends up costing me about $4 to rent gun and goggles for the day. And their equipment is decent too. All the goggles have anti-fog lenses and the rental gun is a Tippman Pro/Carbine semi-automatic with a 200-ball hopper. I would have to spend at least $300-$400 to get a gun significantly better than their rental, and for how infrequently I play, it just doesn't make financial sense. But, if I ever have more free time and start playing more, I might take the plunge and get an Autococker or something similar.
Sounds like you had a good time

Twasn't a field. It was public land up in the boonies. There were about 20 people playing, total, and all were either friends or friends of friends. As for the 10shot pistol, it's because I despise people who play like yourself. I hate spray and prey. I hate big-ass stupid looking hoppers that get in the way, rattle around, give away your position, and are completley unrealistic (200 shots without reloading? Yeah right!!!). Playing with a 10 shot pistol is a TON of fun. I may not win as much, but everything is much more tense, because every shot has to count. I also had a 10 round speed tube to aid reloading.

I've only paintballed once and I found that if you stopped shooting, you got shot. The only way to stay in the game is keep firing at anything you reckon someone is hiding behind.

I reckon if everyone used the 10shotters then the game would be a lot better.
Hmmm...imagine you've got a paintball gun in your hand. You have a choice, shoot Cash or shoot Kristin.

Yeah, it's like that.

As long as you had a good, that is all that really matters. It was quality time with the wife.

that's cool, playing with friends is much more fun than playing with a bunch of random people. but how can you despise people that play the game more seriously or want to play competitively? and how do you know how i play? just because i shot some 800-1000 paintballs in an 8 hour scenario, does not mean i'm blind firing hoping that it will randomly hit someone. and if you want realistic, then don't play paintball. just for comparison, taking a glock 9mm to a machinegun firefight would be a TON of fun too, right? you might die, but everything would be much more tense, because every shot has to count. you sound like the people who complained when the game moved from single shot loading to hoppers, or from pump-action to semi-autos. each improvement or innovation changes the game, but it doesn't make it any less fun. anyhow, you should try playing woodsball/scenario with a modern marker, it's loads of fun, especially with a group of friends.
I've never had the chance to paintball but it sounds like a lot of fun

I DO have a modern marker... if you're referring to a regular style marker with a 200rd hopper and constant air, I've done that also, and I DO NOT LIKE IT. Sure, it's still fun, but I find it much more enjoyable to shoot only 10 shots at a time, it's not only more realistic, it takes more skill. If you give a newbie a fully automatic marker with a 400 rd hopper and tons of Co2, I'm sure he'll be able to shoot a lot of people. See something moving? Keep the trigger down. That is not my idea of a 'good time', 'skill', or technique. It's just 'whoever spends the most wins'. The person who has the most expensive gun and can afford to spend a shitload of money on paint will have a HUGE advantage, which is why I think it's ********. Pumpguns WERE a lot more fun, but hte simple fact is that you'll get slaughtered if you play with semi-autos and automatics. But it WAS more fun. Each shot took MORE time, and required MORE SKILL. IT was cheaper, more skillful, and more realistic.

Plus I think the hopper sticking up on top looks ****ing stupid.

Not always. Having the gear doesn't necessarily mean they have the skills.

I have played against newbies decked with high end electro markers such as Angels or a Timmy with Eggy or Halo hoppers on top and felt really intiminated when they showed how fast they could shoot the paint. But when the game were quickly eliminated from just about every game because they didn't have the skills necessary in the game. I will say they were good at using a lot of paint and painting bunkers.

Also, during the big game I helped ref recently there was a group of players playing with pumps which eliminated many people with fast electro markers.

I am planning a getting a pump to play with to force me to become a better snap shooter. I will mainly use the pump for rec ball but will still keep the autococker for the occasional speed ball tournament.

With skill being equal then equipment can make the difference between losing and winning and becomes an arms race of sort.

Lol, no. I also lurk until World of Warcraft threads are started.

Ten years ago I started playing with 10 round nel-spot pumps and moved up to other semis. It's definitely a different game when you play without relying on a high ROF and huge hoppers. I play speedball and woodsball regularly. Its like they aren't in it to have fun with friends. Its about status. Its a total fashion show out there. People decked out in full tourney clothers and the latest bling bling dripping off of their guns. It is remarkably similar to the custom motorcycle scene; mostly posers copying the 'ideal image' du jour.

There is nothing more gratifying to bring out a 10 year old VM-68 and wail on somebody who was playing the 'my gun cost more than yours and is therefore better' game in between rounds.
I used to play with a 68-carbine and a 14" J&J ceramic barrel. I also agree with Ca$h about the stupidly huge hoppers on top. I used to play with 10-shot clips - although I'd have to load them on the top of the gun.

When we'd play with friends, the guys who would go through the boxes of rounds would get punished twice: once in the wallet, and then we'd make them run around shirtless as we shot at them. Since most of us had the 10-shot philosophy, we'd get hit alot more when the jackasses with the nitro guns would step in, so we'd have to get even at the end. I've found that most guys with the 'paint the forest' philosophy are ususally pussies when it comes to getting shot.

Thanks for backing me up. I just think that having to reload and mind your CO2 and use your shots wisely makes the game MUCH MUCH more interesting than having a 200rd hopper sticking up. Heck, I think I'd go for one of these if I had the bling (with a small 40 rd hopper):

I just can't stand stupid looking unrealstic performing paintball guns.

Now THAT looks like an assault rifle!
