I'm headed back to the US ( New York ) in a few days and I want to know what to expect. You see, here in Europe we've had racial profiling down to a science for years now, so I hardly get checked, but the last few years in the States I've been fearing the random cavity search.

On the news I see people taking off their shoes, belts, brassieres, getting their fingerprints taken, drivers license photos... I hear about people having their precious powerbbooks dropped, being barked at, etc. My girlfriend's father, flying out of New York got "Over here Yassar!" from some security guy, telling him to come over and open his bag (he kinda looks like him though...).

Plus we got the frigging convention, the terrorist threats, philzilla's visit...

Anybody got any travel advice, or fun filled tales?

Whoa, are you referring to another thread? Is that even ALLOWED?
It would be best to not even travel around the conventions.

i'm not in New York for another 74 days, so there's no need for DEFCON 1 just yet. (i'll be sneaking in by road too, but don't tell anyone.)
Travelling in the States by air these days is a joke. Long lines designed to waste people's time.
I can understand increasing security (and getting rid of stupid things like asking people if there's bombs in the suitcases) but I've been surprised how slow and awkward things have become in the past couple of years.
A couple of months ago, I headed back to the States to visit my family (been working abroad for a few years) and the headaches I had to go through, though I had a good laugh when I warned the security guard that I had been wearing the same socks since leaving Singapore the day before and while they likely wouldn't explode, they might not be laundry fresh.

Just give yourself extra time and a strong dose of patience.

Here are some travel tips from the Transportation Security Administration.

I've flown a number of times since 9/11, and I really haven't had any trouble. Being "searched" is relatively painless; it mainly involves a quick wanding, getting your shoes scanned, and having your bag poked through. Just make sure you have some extra time for security and try to be patient with the often self-important and slow-witted TSA agents.

That's unfortunate...sorry, I won't be in NY; however, I'll be close-by in Newark, NJ...
