Yes, this marks the anniversary of me not having TV. If it's not on NPR or CNN, I have no ide what's going on. It's glorious.

Latest commercial? Not a clue.

Stupidest sitcom? *shrug*

Latest Leno one-liner? Never heard it.

Tell me, am I missing anything?

More fitting, it should read, 'I have no idea what's going on. I only listen to/watch NPR and CNN.
Yeah, you're obviously not a sports fan. The thought of going without football (only a couple months to go!) makes me physically ill. Whenever you do get a TV again, skip the BS and get a TiVo.
I don't watch much TV, except for the news, weather, and occasionally the History channel. The only thing outside of that has been seasons 1 and 2 of 24 on DVD. I'm glad I finished those, as they were really addictive. I kept staying up late to watch 4 or 5 episodes at a time, and I just don't normally do that for TV.
I don't watch TV often and when I do it's just to pass the time. I rarely even care about what I'm watching. I usually just acquire the few episodes of shows a week that I don't want to miss, especially since being in Japan where they aren't available to me.
Last I checked, CNN is a TV channel.

Good for you. The latest drivel from Fox has me pretty pissed off.
I don't understand....so how can I get a year of TV for free?
You aren't missing anything important. Well, except for boxing. I've trekked out to the TV to watch boxing and the UFC for the past few Wednesdays. I'll see how long that lasts. Other than that, it's about all the TV I see, unless I peek at C-SPAN or CNN for a few minutes.
Good for you, I guess. I've known a few people not have TV's. They're always so proud of themselves and trumpet the fact to anyone who'll listen. Personally, I've never watched much telly, because there's usually somethings that interests me more, not because I've set myself an agenda.

TV is no different to radio or a newspaper or the internet, or any other medium - as an individual you'll find 99% of it useless, you just have to find your 1%.
Back when Charter let me have the interweb without getting the television service I never had cable. But when I wanted to raise the bandwidth a bit they MADE me get a package that included digital cable.

I watch it when I go to bed. That is about it. I usually fall asleep watching it. I have a timer set to automatically have my TV go off in 1 hour so I don't wake up at 6am to the sound of the "Saved by the Bell" theme going off.

You get a gold star, Reggie. Good going! Did you know you can also go to http://www.cnn.com ?
IMHO, the only thing you might be missing is NOW with Bill Moyers. In the Boston area, it's on Friday evenings on PBS. He's had a wonderful roster of interviewees this year; people with interesting viewpoints who you won't find elsewhere. But even this show can be caught on the internet; and he's retiring soon, sadly!

Long ago when we lived in California, we didn't have a TV either. We couldn't afford it at the time. People in LA where we lived thought this was either a) some kind of weird religion, or b) just incomprehensible. More people there had TVs than had phones at the time.

I won't defend CNN, but National Public Radio is a damn fine news source... The closest thing the U.S. has to the BBC World Service. I know the cliche is they lean left and maybe their talk programming does... But I usually hear multiple viewpoints during their news, which is more than you can say about any of the outlets who win ratings based on the volume of their hosts.

I'm not paying anything for receiving TV with a simple antenna...

That's a common misconception.

Yes, but you said "If it's not on NPR or CNN" not "CNN.com." How am I supposed to know which you meant?

I've gone completely without TV for a few stretches here and there over the years, I don't see what the big deal is. I watch a few shows and sporting events regularly, ignore the rest, and don't channel surf.
If it ain't on TVLand, I won't know a thing about it!

I'll concur. Some of the talk-radio stuff is definately left of center, but Morning Edition and ATC are pretty balanced. I hear lots of view points from both sides and they ask some uncomfortable questions to both sides. Talk of the Nation is alright as far as the talk radio goes.

Minnesota Public Radio also has a BBC World feed at night and they have "The World" from BBC at 7:00 pm. They also have a Canadian show (As It Happens?) that has really good interviews and the hosts ask some pretty tough questions. They don't let people wiggle around the answers.

I'm a big fan of Minnesota Public Radio.
