My Intenret was just raised 60%+14.5% tax!!!

I am so pissed, I go away for 3 weeks (July 24th) and yesterday can't access my home development server! At least via the HTTP. So I try AFP and SSH and it's all working fine. I call Technical support, and they go through some stuff and say it is my router (after my IP changed and I needed to find out the new one since the 2 Dynamic IP's I had changed Friday). I play with my router reboot it, turn on/off port 80 and it still isn't working.

I call up a few minutes ago and they state that due to viruses and worms they have blocked a few ports, Port 80 being one of them. They state they are doing it to everyone and won't make any exeptions. They say they gave me a $5/month discount (to the $49.95) since I was a loyal customer earlier this year.

They are now forcing people who want to have a webserver (even it it's for internal purposes only) to go to the Server 2.5 package which offers a Static IP.

I considered cable, but there are a few problems that make it even worse:

Landlord won't allow it
It's the same price as ADSL with a basic phone line
Shaw heavily monitors your Internet usage

But now it's going to be $30 more for ADSL which I have had since Jan 27, 1998. I love ADSL and don't like the restrictions and Big Brothering of Shaw. I don't even use my landline. I only keep it for ADSL since I have unlimited 24/7 Cellphone I use.

Anyone else a Telus Velocity 2.5 dynamic IP user?

Translation: They noticed that a lot of people who had residential lines used them for running their web servers, and since the ISP wasn't obligated to provide them the port, they could change it so they could charge more money.

$49 though? that's not bad at all. ... ESPECIALLY in USD. (and I think you're speaking of AUD)

For the record I was paying $64.95/month from Jan 27 1998 - July 26 2002 for the MMG network, so it wouldn't be as big a jump. but still. I need it for work, even though most of my sites will be DB backended within 18 months, I still should test on a physcally seperate server.

Also means I am in violation of TOS for having FTP open so I can trasnfer files back and forth, or SSH to monitor my network.

Anyone here using Shaw or Telus.

and it's $50 CDN so that's $35-$38 US. and the new price of $85 upped it $5) would be $60 US/month.

and I am in Canada.

It's 2.5mbps down and 640kbps up (clocked at 900kbps upload though)

I use Shaw in Edmonton. It's part of my digital cable package, but I think it runs at about $40/month separately. The line's roughly 5 Mb both ways, depending on what I'm connecting to.

I'm surprised Shaw is so Big Brother-like over there. Here, I have received one email from them when I downloaded roughly 50 GB in a month. I routinely download over 20 GB/month still, but they've never complained. I also have hosted servers: HTTP, QSS, etc. In fact, the only two customers I know Shaw has dropped both had downloaded over 100 GB/month for a while. I guess Shaw's just more easy going this side of the Rockies.

Anyway, why don't you set up your web server on port 8080 or something else? Oh, and be sure to actually read your TOS. Shaw tried to tell me my transfer limits were 6 GB down and 2 GB up. I then quoted them the TOS which states there is no limit to residential cable connections, only a reference to being a burden on the network (see the 100 GB/month situations above). The same might be true for server uses with Telus.

You getting that e-mail is Big Brother enough. I have never EVER received an e-mail about my bandwidth usage. I use 2.5mbps with ADSL. and I also need a fully reliable connection. Looks like I have no choice but to swallow the $40/month increase.

You consider one email in four years Big Brother-like? I was in violation of the TOS (burden on the network) and they told me so with no penalty drummed out. I've never had a problem since, even when I bend or break the TOS once in a while. Shaw's great over here.

I think that happens a lot more with ALL services whether it's DSL, internet access, cable television, utilities, cell phone service, etc. I mean, we could all go on and on, you know? We have Adelphia cable which, literally, every three months tacks on another $3 rate increase. I pay a whopping $54 for basic cable -- nothing special. It's ridiculous.

I'm with ya on this one with being upset.

Problem is, there's not much anyone can do about any of it.

If your webserver is just for private use, just pick a different port. 8080 is a common one to use, but you can pick anything that strikes your fancy.

I upgraded to static. I don't want to use uncommon ports etc and it is a violation (They do port scans) so no big deal ($420.21/year later).

i find it hmmmmmm, vaguely funny, that Shaw is Big Brother. What do you mean your landlord wont LET you get cable? Now, I know you've all some debatably odd laws up there in "Australia", but I'd be REALLY surprised if that was legal.

Of course, Stateside here its actually a Federal Mandate that apartment complexes have to allow you to install a mini-dish. I can't imagine that a landlord could legally prevent you from acquiring a media outlet.

It does require modifying the house... holes in the walls, etc...

Over here it's at the landlord's discretion; but I don't think any of them would say no.

(Actually, we didn't ask our landlord - he's been pissing us off so much that we don't want to talk to him unless necessary. But he can't really complain, as we've already caught him in breech of contract, so if anything went to court then we'd win.)
