do these thing really help with standard dialup connection speed? I've read they really only help with loading of web page via compression of the graphics. There is no speed increase for data file transfers becasue they aren't compressed, .mp3 for example.

You are correct in your asumptions. A lot of Internet data is already compressed, so the "accelerators" don't do ANYTHING to it. I believe that there was a use for these softwares-about ten years ago. Today, web content is much more advanced and more highly evolved, so they are pretty useless.
Well, they do extra text compression (not all servers do this!), and they recompress JPEGs to lower quality. Otherwise, there's really nothing they can do.
