To Special Guest Villain, an Austin, Texas pop band whose musical stylings kept my
toes tapping and my fingers plucking (the QWERTY keyboard) in the wee hours.

I take my wig off (since I don't wear a hat) to the Duke Nukem 30 development team.
These guys deserve— and are almost assured — a special place in the annals of the com-
puter game industry. They have found a suitable vehicle to channel their incredible
energy, intelligence, and imagination. 1 am particularly grateful to George Broussard,
Scott Miller, and Greg Malone for taking precious time from ^n inhuman development
schedule to reply to my e-mail, answer my dumb questions and share their wit. insights,
and good humor. The next person on my list is Terry O'Donnell, who, in the role of
developmental and copy editor, helped me shape this book into the mess it is in today.
Other persons worthy of recognition for their sometimes questionable but always unwa-
vering support, include my dear colleagues Raleigh, Carol. Jovita. and Vickey. Thank
you, too. Diana, because you've always been there for me. Finally. 1 owe a great deal
to Gary Masters, associate publisher at Sybex, for believing 1 could write and giving me
the opportunity to do it. Gary, the carpal tunnel is only a minor inconsequence. But
most of all. I want to thank you. the intelligent reader and game enthusiast, for want-
ing to know more and pushing the PC game industry to keep outdoing itself.
