About Fetch...
Fetch is a Macintosh program for transferring files using the File Transfer Protocol (FTP) on a TCP/
IP network, such as the Internet. This allows a networked Macintosh to exchange files with any FTP
server on the same network. Fetch runs on Mac OS System 7.0 or newer.
If you have questions or comments about Fetch, please visit the message board at http://

Where to start
If you are familiar with file transfer in general and FTP in particular, start with the “Quick Guide to
Fetch” topic. If you are new to file transfer and would like to learn in a step-by-step fashion, try “A
Fetch Tutorial.” All of the Fetch commands and screen elements are explained under the “Reference”
heading, and most computer terms used elsewhere in the help section are defined in the “Glossary of
Terms” section.
Balloon Help is also available for most of the menus and buttons in Fetch (except on Mac OS X); see the
“Help” topic for additional information.
Licensing
Multiple-user and Internet Service Provider (ISP) licenses are available from Fetch Softworks. For

Quick Guide to Fetch
Connecting
When you start Fetch or choose the New Connection... menu item, you will be prompted with the
New Connection dialog box. You must specify the name or IP number of the machine you wish to
connect to (the "host"), either by typing it, or by choosing one from the Shortcuts pop-up menu. If
required, enter a user ID and password. In order to use “anonymous FTP”, the host name will suffice;
Fetch will substitute the user ID “anonymous” and send a default password. NOTE: The information
entered in the New Connection dialog box has nothing to do with your license to run Fetch. It
specifies the server with which you are going to exchange files. If you need help collecting this
information, contact your service provider (i.e. the company that runs the server in question).
Directories
Fetch displays directories much like the Mac OS Finder displays folders in list view. Once you are
connected, the current directory…
