ReadMe for "Font Fixer for 8.6" date: June 22, 1999 This System Extension is being licensed to you free of charge and AS IS. It fixes a bug introduced with MacOS 8.6 which can lead to corrupted fonts and therefore lead to application and system crashes. Installation: Only install this product on Mac systems running MacOS 8.6! To install this System Extension, drag the file called "Font Fixer for 8.6" and drop it on top of your System Folder. The MacOS will place this file into your System Folder->Extensions folder. Restart your Mac. To deinstall this System Extension, open your System Folder->Extensions folder and remove this file from your Extensions folder. Restart your Mac. This System Extension works quietly in the background fixing fonts that get corrupted by MacOS 8.6. It should have absolutely no affect on your system use or performance. DiamondSoft cannot offer technical support for this product. If you feel that it is causing problems on your system, then deinstall it. Description of Problem: The problem occurs with older style fonts, specifically fonts which have "FONT" resources in them. Using MacOS 8.6, if one of these fonts is "looked at" by any application, the system puts a corrupt resource into the font. From that point on the font is corrupt and can crash your application or your system if used by any application. The problem can also occur with older style fonts embedded within applications. For example, Adobe PageMaker 6.5 has an embedded font containing a FONT resource. This problem can make PageMaker crash on startup when running on MacOS 8.6. Certain applications which provide password protection dialog boxes use an embedded font to display the "bullets" which hide a users password. Some of these programs are also prone to the problem.
