General Edit Lite READ ME

Thank you for your interest in Quadrivio General Edit Lite. This free tool for programmers allows you to: 1) Open and edit disk files as hexadecimal bytes, ASCII characters, Unicode characters (Roman encoding only), 16-bit decimal integers, or 32-bit decimal integers. Files can be larger than RAM. 2) View and edit the Finder information (FInfo record) for disk files. 3) View RAM. Program requirements A PowerPC Macintosh or PowerPC Mac OS-compatible computer is required. System 7.1 or later is required; System 7.6.1 or the latest version of OS 8 or 9 is recommended. Notes • WARNING TO NON-PROGRAMMERS! Editing the raw data of a file requires care! You should back up any file that you intend to edit. If you make a mistake, it may not be possible for the file’s original program to open or read the file. If you are not sure what you are doing, you should not use this tool to modify files. • Using balloon help You can turn on balloon help temporarily by holding down the control key; the balloons will go away when you release the key. Most of the buttons and menu items have balloons. • Opening files Files are opened for reading only, unless you uncheck the box in the “Open” dialog. To edit the file’s data, click the lock button below the pane, or choose the appropriate Unlock command from the View menu. • Changing the data format for a column Select a data column by clicking or selecting some text in the column. Choose the data type and label choice by making a selection in the View menu. • Changing the pane sizes Move the cursor into the area between the top (meta-data) pane and the bottom (data) pane. Press the mouse button and drag the dividing line up or down (or all the way up) to change the relative sizes of the panes. • Adding another data column Choose the More Columns command from the View menu or click the left triangle button at the bottom of the window. • Utility Window Choose Show Utility Window in the Edit column to see the current cursor position in the data. • Preferences Choose Set Preferences in the Edit column, and see the choices that are available. • Play with fonts 1) Open a file, or type some text in a new empty window. 2) Choose the Set Text Options command from the Edit menu. Move the dialog box so you can see the text in the data (lower) pane. 3) Click the Window radio button in the dialog box. 4) Hold down the font or size popups and see what different fonts look like. • View RAM 1) Choose the Open RAM command in the File menu. 2) Observe the changing value at 0x16A - that’s the TickCount low-memory global. 3) The vertical scroll bar is a coarse adjustment when scrolling through megabytes of data. Choose the Add Fine-tuning Control command from the View menu. Choose it again.
