The Making of Makers
If two unconnected people were to write down their idea of the 200 most
significant people of the twentieth century, who would be sure to figure on both
lists? Adolf Hitler? Marilyn Monroe? Albert Einstein? Anyone at all?
We do not know, but we suspect that there would be very little overlap.
Everybody has their own gallery of heroes and villains, and in any case, how do
you begin to weigh the achievement of a surgeon against that of a philosopher?
A mountaineer against a rock group? A poet against a president? There is, after
all, no universal currency of greatness, no objective way to reduce the life’s work
of extraordinary people to measurable units.
This CD-ROM, Makers of the 20th Century, started life as a series
in the
Sunday Times Magazine of London. It consisted of a thousand short pieces, each
one a life in a nutshell, by more than 400 writers. We have built on the magazine
series and, using the whole armoury of multimedia, we have
given an account of
our busy century through the life stories of key individuals. So, as well as learning
