Ah... what a laid back existance editing the clubs newsletter; no
pressure; no deadlines and plenty of contributions. It would be a
shame to give this job away to some diligent, enthusiastic,
youthful work-aholic, NO NO, I mean PERSON. It’s so easy puting
one of these together you know? But we can’t have the President
doing all the work can we? NO NO, so we need some-one to come and
fill a little yet well-respected position, EDITOR. The hours are
short and benefits great, and no marginal tax rates and many
untaxable fringe benefits. So, if you want this fantastic job
then apply now.
Have a Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year.
Happy Computing,
Terry.

APPLE-BUG <3> Christmas 1986
[ Secretary’s Notes ]
by Vince Crosdale.
At last exams are over and I think this will be a big relief
not only to myself, but to all the school children out there as
well. Finally, we can get back to doing some serious computing.
Little has happened in our small corner of the computing world
over the last month, but one item that did occur was the arrival
of a new Apple //gs at the November meeting. This sparked a large
amount of interest in Apple’s new little beauty, and the queue
for a ‘hands-on’ demonstration of this machine was never wanting
for numbers. Glenn MacDanial (of Delsound, in the City) provided
all and sundry with as good a display of the machines
capabilities with the limited amount of software he had
available. The machine appeared to impress all who actually got
the opportunity to have a ’play’ with it.
A bit of friendly competition appeared later in the day in the
form of an Amiga, and once this had been set up next to the gs, a
challange was issued to see who could impress the crowd better.
The end result of this would have to be declared a draw, as
reports back from the members present indicated that all felt
each machine had its own place in the market with both of them
performing well in the applications that they were put through.
Many thanks must go to Glen from Delsound for providing us with
the //gs.
A few magazines have arrived in the mail over the last month,
with a new addition to our library appearing in the form of the
newsletter of the ACT Apple User’s Group. The arrival of this
came as no great suprise, actually as the deal was arranged with
a gentleman in Canberra who rings the BBS regularly. It is an
interesting magazine, consisting mainly of articles from other
magazines around Australia and the US.
A few points that need to be cleared up. We have had many
inquires as to how the Club Treasurer could be allowed to do the
club audit. Well, to set the record straight, Eric performed the
audit before he became Treasurer, and was asked to do this by the
previous committee as he is a bank manager. It was after he had
performed the audit that he was approached to become Club
Treasurer and accepted. The discrepancy of $100.00 in the totals
is due to a typo, nothing more, and Eric received no remuneration
for performing the audit.
Another matter that seemed to cause a bit of confusion was the
item about membership cards in the minutes. You should have
received a membership card with this newsletter, providing your
membership expires after January, 1987. This card will cover you
until your membership expires. The deal with displaying the cards
is that we would like all members to display their membership
cards on their machines from the January meeting onwards. We
would also ask all visitors and members to please sign the book
near the front door. This is to allow us to try and regulate
visitors coming in and setting up their equipment and
inconveniencing club members by taking up space. We would like to
point out that we are not trying to stop visitors coming to the
APPLE-BUG <4> Christmas 1986
meetings, but we do ask that if they wish to set up their
equipment, please join up first (feel free to have a good look
around and make all the enquires you like first) before setting
up their equipment. We are not doing this to try and become
militant, it is just in reply to complaints received about
members not being able to set up because a non-member is using
club facilities.
The BBS has been extremely well received by the general public
with membership now up to 70 users. It is constantly in use (when
modifications aren’t in progress) and the message bases are
filling up quite well. Again, for all who didn’t get the number
last month, it is
RApple-Q ABBS (online 24 hrs)
300, 1200 and 2400 baud, Bell and CCITT
Telephone (07) 284-6145
Well, that’s about it for this month, but with a two month
break from the newsletter coming up, we hope to have a fair bit
to forward to you all in the February edition.
Best Wishes for the Christmas/New Year season to all, and Good
Computing.
Regards, Vince.
C The Trading Table Jj
by Graham Black
The Trading Table will be operating as usual in the new year,
with a few added items of interest. In 1987, we intend having
some modems on sale, so that members who don’t have one yet, will
have the oportunity to buy a good quality modem at the right
price, so that they can enjoy the pleasures of BBSing, along with
the rest of us. We are hoping to be able to sell the NetComm 3+12
manual modem for around the $300 mark. NetComm produce aé_ every
good range of modems, and it is only a matter of personal
preference as to the type of modem you want, at a price that is
realistic. The BBS (RAppleQ), is operating with the NetComm 1234A
modem. This modem is almost top of the range, and will handle a
variety of baud rates. The NetComm 3+12 modem uses 300 baud and
1200/75 baud. This will allow you to access Telecom’s VIATEL, as
well as any BBS in Queensland, and more than likely, any BBS in
Australia and overseas.
Our current stock items will be reduced to the special prices
which were advertised in the last two newsletters. These prices
are being retained, simply to clear out our existing stocks. Once
they are gone, all new stocks will be at the usual prices. We
still have a reasonable supply of Single Sided Double Density
disks in stock, at $23.00 per box.
Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Regards, Graham
