THE SECRETARY
APPLE-Q: THE BRISBANE USERS’ GROUP
P.O.BOX 721
SOUTH BRISRANE.QLD 4101
We require an address for each of the following members:
#0040 =Ted Steiler
#0284 = Neville Hack
#0302 = Paul Clewley
Many thanks to the few members who have taken the time to fill in the
Membership Renewal forms, and return them to us so we could update the club
records.
At the March Fxecutive Committee meeting, the matter of increasing the
membership fees was discussed at length. The New Membership Fees are as
follows:
Joining Fee: $10
Adults/Family: $20
Students/Pensioners: $12
(Students under 21 years - Pensioners on production of Pensioner Card
- at the discretion of the Executive Committee)
The club’s power packs are disappearing. We used to have enough to go
round all the members when they set up their equipment, but now we only have
twelve (12) left. We cannot afford to replace them when they go missing, as
they are quite expensive. We have lost, on an average, one power pack per
month, over the last twelve months. Is someone out there collecting power
packs?
Two of the missing extension cords have been located.
We have been ask by many people if the club is an Incorporated Society.
The answer has always been NO. Moves are now underway to incorporate. Bernie
Benson has volunteered to set things up for us through the Justice Department
Incorporation scheme. He has already started preparing the constitution, and
will have something prepared for the next committee Meeting, which will be
held the on 20th April at the club rooms.
C Editor’s Notes ]
We desperately need an Editor. If you would like to take on the job of
typing in other members contributions, and generally getting the newsletter
ready for the printer, then please make yourself known to the committee. This
APPLE-BUG <4> APRIL 1987
position was not filled at the AGM, and we are still looking for someone to
fill it. Please also remember that this position requires the member to be of
a legal age so that they are capable of signing cheques for the club.
C Secretary’s Notes ]
It never fails to amaze me just how much faster the years seem to go by
each time around. Here it is, Easter again, and it seems like just the other
day that it was only Christmas. I think it must have something to do with the
amount of time that we spend doing this newsletter.
We have been busy over the last month with a large amount of
correspondence passing through our hands in relation to our meeting with
Apple Queensland a while back. We have contacted the southern States, and
have been informed by them that they also recieved the same treatment from
Apple. The Apple Users Society of Melbourne (AUSOM) have told us that their
equipment was donated to them by a dealer that has special ties with the user
group. Therefore, it appears that it would be back to the drawing board for
us. However, we have had an offer from Apple Queensland for two 5 megabyte
hard disk drives at staff prices. We are seriuosly considering this offer,
but after advice from one of the Committee members that a few members have
stated that they think too much money is being spent on equipment for the
BBS, I would like to ask all members to state what they would like to see the
club doing with the funds that the club raises. If you have any ideas at all,
then please let us know. We are open to suggestion from all members and we
would like to hear from you. If we get no feedback from members, then we will
assume that it is fine to go ahead and purchase the drives from Apple.
Another matter which may cause concern amongst club members is the rise in
membership fees. The Committee approved at the March meeting, a new fee
structure for the club. We have raised the adult membership fee to $20 (up
$2) and the student/pensioner fee to $12 (up $3). We have also introduced a
joining fee of $10. This joining fee will not affect current members of the
club. We announced that we were looking at increasing the membership fees in
a previous newsletter and we asked for feedback on this matter. To date I
have recieved one letter about this. We have tried to keep the membership
fees the same as previous for as long as possible, but unfortunately the time
has come prematurely. The club is becoming incorporated and the cost of the
day to day operation of the club has escalated over the years. Therefore, we
feel that it is necessary to up the fees slightly. The raises were kept as
low as possible, and we would like all members to remember that it is only
once a year that you pay fees, and the raise, in the worst case, is only 6
cents a week.
A few newsletters and magazines have beeh recieved over the past month,
and I will get these to Richard as soon as possible. We have also recieved a
lot of enquires from Apple users in regards to both membership and problems
that they are experiencing with their machines. We have endeavoured to answer
all these enquires, but if we have missed someone out, it is not intentional
and we will get around to them in the very near future.
The main feature of the newsletter this month is the membership list. This
list contains names, suburbs and phone numbers of members of Apple-Q. Please
do not abuse this list, it is put in for your convenience, and I would ask
that any member that has any trouble from other members abusing this list to
please contact us with the relevant details and we will take the appropriate
APPLE-BUG <5> APRIL 1987
action against these people. The list is put in at the request of a lot of
members of the club who for mixed reasons cannot. make it to the Open Days and
asked for the list so that they could get in touch with other people in their
area who may be able to help them with « problem they are oxperiencing.
Well, that’s about it for this month. I will not be able to attend the
April Open Day as 1 will be heading off to Gladstone to attempt. to win a
concrete canoe race. So if you have any enquires on the Open Day, please
direct them to Graham or any of the other Committee members present.
So until next month, Good Computing.
C BBS Report ]
by Graham Black
We have been having a bit of trouble with some users not being able to get
on the system. It was discovered that power spikes were affecting the
Non-volatile memory of the modem. We have corrected this (1 hope) by reset ing
the modem defaults on a regular basis. If anyone has any trouble connecting,
Please let us know. If you are using the BELL tones, you can expect trouble
from time to time.
Just to make matters worse, two weeks ago, the system decided to rol] over
and turn up its toes. This did not exactly fill me with overwhelming joy,
with the prospect of having to put the BBS over onto my system (again). The
club’s computer is currently in for repairs, and should be back up and
working by the time you read this newsletter. Delsound Electronics have been
good to us again, and have loaned us a computer to keep the system up and
running.
The on-line games, Stock Market and Casino, are increasing in popularity.
As the funds become available, we will improve these areas of entertainment.

APPLE-BUG <6> APRIL 1987
[ New Release ]
Apple introduces an updated //e
The Apple //e now features an expanded keyboard with a numeric keypad, a
platinum colour scheme, and 128k of RAM memory. Apple announced in
mid-January. The new model is: otherwise little changed from its predecessor -
even the price remains the same.
The new keyboard has the same layout as the //GS keyboard, but the heavier
feel of the older //e keyboard. The reset key has been moved above the ESC
and 1 keys and the power light is now above the slash key on the numeric
keypad. The numeric keypad’s CLEAR key, which returns a control-X on the
//GS, is a duplicate ESC key on the new //e. By means of a hardware- jumper
cut-and-paste operation, you can make it match the //GS, however.
In addition to the visible changes on the exterior of the computer, the
machine uses a_ revised motherboard that Apple has actually been putting in
new //es since October. The new board includes 64k of RAM in just two chips
instead of the previous eight and uses just one ROM chip instead of the
previous two. The contents of the ROM are unchanged. The motherboard has also
been revised slightly so that an additional 64k of memory can be placed on a
very small card :that is inserted into the auxillary slot during
manufacturing. Thus, all units now come with 128k memory. The internal
numeric keypad connector was retained.
The shift-key mod. In order to allow mouse-based software to detect a
“shift-click” (simultaneous presses on a shift key and the mouse button), the
new motherboard comes with the "shift-key" modification already wired. This
modification originated with the Apple II-Plus, which doesnt support
lower-case characters. The II-Plus shift keys affect only the dual--character
number ahd symbol keys. In order to make the shift keys functional with
letters too, a scheme was devised whereby users could wire the shift key to
the third pushbutton on the game connector. By monitoring that "push-button",
word processors and other programs can determine whether the II-Plus_ shift
key is being pressed.
When the original //e was being released, jumper pads were provided at
motherboard location X6 to make this an easy modification. Now bow-ties are
provided to make it easy to disconnect. Problems can arise because devices
that actually use the internal games port’s third pushbutton input will cause
shift-key-modified machines to go into permanent shifted state unless the
modification is removed In addition, simultaneously pressing the shift key
and the third’ pushbutton input will cause a short circuit on,
shift-key-modified machines and shut down the Apple //e power supply.
Since the open-apple and solid-apple/option keys are wired to the game
connector’s first and second pushbutton inputs, this chart and program show
you how to read all three keys:
decimal -decimal hex description
49249 -16287 $c061 PBO, open-apple
49250 -16286 $C062 PB1, solid-apple
49251 ~16285 $CO63 PB2, shift- key mod
10 IF PEEK(49249)>127 THEN PRINT "You’re pressing the open-apple key."
30 IF PEEK(49250)>127 THEN PRINT "You’re pressing the solid-apple key."
40 IF PEEK(49251)>127 THEN PRINT "You’re pressing the shift key.”
50 GOTO 10
This program says you are pressing the shift key when you’re not, then the
APPLE-BUG <7> APRIL 1987
"“shift-key mod" is connected. This is always the case on the //GS, which has
another means, known as the "modifier-key status register", of telling you
not only the status of shift, but also of control, caps lock, option, and
open-apple, as well as whether any key on the numeric keypad is down, whether
any of the ASCII-code keys is down, or whether the keyboard is repeating.
This register is at byte 49189 ($C025). Here’s an Applesoft program that
shows how to use it.
10 D=PEEK(49189) : GOSUB 1510 : HOME
20 IF B(7)=1 THEN PRINT "The open-apple key is pressed."
30 IF B(6)=1 THEN PRINT "The option key is pressed."
40 IF B(5)=0 THEN PRINT "An ASCII-code key is pressed."
50 IF B(4)=1 THEN PRINT "A numeric keypad key is pressed."
60 IF B(3)=1 THEN PRINT "The keyboard is repeating."
70 IF B(2)=] THEN PRINT "The caps lock key is pressed."
80 IF B(1)=1 THEN PRINT "The control key is pressed."
90 IF B(0)=1 THEN PRINT "A shift key is pressed."
99 POKE 49168,0 : GOTO 10 : REM clear keyboard strobe
1510 FOR N=7 TO 0 STEP -1
1520 : BN=2*N : B(N)=0 : IF D>BN-1 THEN D=D-BN :B(N)=1
1530 NEXT : RETURN
The reason a program might want to know if a numeric keypad key is being
pressed is so that it can tell between, for example, the keypad’s slash key
and the main keyboard’s slash key. All of the keypad’s keys have main
keyboard duplicates. Also notice that bit 5 is meaningful when it has been
cleared to zero, while the others are meaningful when they are set to one.

The Author intends this book to be an introduction to machine language on
the Apple II, and to help readers understand the basic machine architecture
of the 6502 and the internal memory organization of the Apple II. This book
puts those concepts across very well for advanced and beginner, assembly
language programmers, and it helps a bit to know something about the machine
before diving into this volume.
Such things as binary and hexadecimal notation are explained in the first
few chapters. Further through the text are many good examples and locations
inside Applesoft, the assembly programmer can use. Appendices include an
ASCII code chart, the effect on the status register of every instruction, and
the circuit and artwork for an interface board that can be used with some
examples.

(C Letters to the SYSOP |] from the BBS
From —> BERNIE BENSON (#193)
Date -> 15/03/87 22:05:16
Subject -—> More Funds
The following suggestions are submitted in complete ignorance of previous
management decisions and also without having read the Club Rules.
This letter is in response to requests for ways to increase the funds in
the club coffers.
I think that it would be fair to say that over the years a number of hard
working people have applied a lot of their spare time for the benefit of the
club members at that time and also for the future. It is the future that
these comments are aimed at with the spin off being able to Pick up a few
dollars along the way.
In referring to the future I believe that the club assets built up over
the years should be protected for future members as well as being available
for present use.
The asset to which I am referring is the Software Library and to me this
appears to be available to all and sundry to copy at will and in some cases
to have complete disregard for the club asset, this is evidenced by a
reminder on the last page of the current bug which identifies a number of
missing disks.
To provide some security to the club asset (the librarian should be the
only person with access to the library) and to turnover a few extra dollars
it is suggested that the software library be available to members only
through a disk purchase basis.
It is suggested that disks be sold at $5.00 each and that orders must be
Placed through an appropriate source with delivery free if picked up at the
club meets or by payment of a further charge to cover costs if it is required
to use the postal service.
At current trading table prices this represents an outlay of $2.70 for the
programs and $2.30 for the disk. Good value! As the library remains in the
control of the librarian the possibility of the loss of further disks is
reduced hence the availibility of the disks for future members.
This would also make the library available to country members and members
who for one reason or another do not attend club meetings. I may be incorrect
but I don’t think these members presently have software library access.
Library Listing:
I am presently aware of two Apple clubs who offer their library to members
at a price and the following is based on their current listing.
A.P.P.L.E. Co-Op - Their list is simply a catalog of each disk with three
column per page. Approx cost $A7.50 per disk.
Sydney Apple Users Group ~- Their handbook is a program listing with notes
regarding the programs. However, their move to the present presentation has
been made over a number of years as their earlier listings were mainly
catalog listings only similar to A.P.P.L.E. Cost $8.00 per disk.
Both charge postage extra.
I do not know the number of disks owned by the club, however I estimate
that to catalog a disk, cut and paste the catalog to fit three across a page
would take at the most 10 minutes per disk. If action were to be taken in
this regard, I would be prepared to back up this suggestion with an offer to
prepare the first 25 disks within one week of receiving the disks.
The catalog listing would have to be limited in length to enable them to
fit three across a page. For DOS disks Poke 44567,14 limits listing to 15
APPLE-BUG <10> April 1987
characters the same as ProDOS and it is suggested that Elite Proportional be
used.
With the involvement of a few members under the control of the Software
Librarian I am sure that the listing could be available for distribution with
the next A-Bug. Further refinements to the listing and maybe the addition of
some program descriptions could be a long term objective.
The BBS
The users of this facility also should in some way provide some funds for
additions to the system maintenance, replacement and updating etc.
I suggested that members who wish to have access to certain facilities on
the BBS (I don’t have any suggestions) should pay an additional BBS fee of
say $5.00 and this will tend to help the RBS to be self supporting.

Subject —> Hard Disk (Profile)
J. read with much interest, about the support that Apple has offered the
club. I was under the impression that the 5 meg Profile (Hard-Disk) was
obsolete. I think a User Group is the best means of FREE advertising, a
computer company can have. I know the Dealers are always referring people to
Apple-Q, as that was how I came in contact with the club.
This Bulletin Board System, thut you Sysops have set up, would have to be
proof that the Apple is not just an expensive, overpriced TOY, and I
congratulate you all on your achievements of such a massive undertaking, with
such limited equipment at your disposal. I feel sure, that without the
support of Delsound Electronics and some very generous club members, with the
equipment they have loaned the club on an almost permanant basis, this BBS
may have remained a dream, instead of becoming a reality. I think the club
should go ahead and purchase the 5 meg Profiles for the BBS.
I think the Executive Committee, and the Sysops, have done an _ excellent
job in providing the members of Apple-Q with a first-class on-line facility.

{ Software Library ]
It has been requested many times that we publish a list of all the club’s
Public Domain Software. When people ask this, I don’t think they realise just
how big a task that really is as we have over 9500 public domain programs on
the club disks. However, here is the start of the library, and we will
endevour to put together more listings as time permits. The files are divided
into sections, and the files in each section are required for the particular
applications. The prefix before each file name represents the file type. i.e.
B=Binary T=Text A=Applesoft I=Integer. Each section is seperated by a
string of -’s and each volume is seperated by a string of -’s.
