Apple-Bug - 3 Such an Innocent Word..... by Vince Crosdale CHANGE (noun) - Alteration; Substitution of one for another, Variety, Alteration from one working system to another; Reversal. Such an innocent word, but one that human nature ‘appears to react against in a stronger manner than any other innocent word. But this one word has suddenly played a big part in Apple-Q Inc. A rather unusual way to start an article in a newsleticr from a club that has computers as it primary interest, but one that I feel is extremely appropriate at the current time. For those of you that weren't at the May Open Day, change has occurred within the club. The path that Apple-Q Inc. has been following for a number of years now, contained no direction or purpose for its travellers, This path has now been rerouted, and direction has been achieved. Apple-Q Inc. will become an INFORMATION INTERCHANGE for the exchange of ideas and information relevant to the Apple family of computers. This interchange will take a number of forms, but contains two major components. These are demonstrations and Special Interest Groups (S.1.G.). With a main demonstration to show the capabilities of the Apple range of computers and the equipment and software that is available to the computer user, and SIGs to home in on the finer, more’ specialized areas related to computer usage (such as a Beginners SIG for those that have recently bought a computer and don't know much about their new ‘toy’ or a Communications SIG for those that are either just beginner or have been participating in the world of computer communications via the modem, to name a couple), we feel that we have guided the club towards a direction that has something to offer everyone in their quest for knowledge about their computer. But changes like these don't come easily, and something has to suffer. in this instance, the sufferer is the computer itself, because it is no longer allowed to attend the meetings. From the June meeting on, there will be no computers at the Apple-Q Inc. Open Days. Computers on the premises will be those that are authorized by the Committee to be on the premises for the purpose of demonstration and/or SIG. I would take this opportunity to say that there will be NO compromise to this decision. The following is an outline of the ‘meeting format that will occur from June onwards. Apple-Q Inc. Open Day Meeting Format. 11.00 am - 12.00 pm Trading table open. Informal period including: Registration of members (new and renewals). Disk of the Month sales. Raffle Tickets sold. Public Domain Software available. 12.00 pm - 12.30 pm ~ 12.30 pm - 2.00 pm question Lunch, The Trading table, etc continues during this period. Invited speaker to give demonstration and follow up with organised and answer session relating to the demonstration. 2.00 pm - 2.30 pm 2.30 pm - 4.00 pm Communications Appleworks Afternoon tea break. Draw raffle prize and door prize. Special Interest Group meetings: New Users (Beginners) Apple // Computers Apple //GS Computers Macintosh Computers 4.00 pm - 4.30 pm Trading Table, Software Library etc. open for business. 4.30 pm. Close the day. Apple-Bug - 4 With regards to the main demonstration at each meeting, the Committee has organised the following for the next three months : June ‘A Guided Tour of the Apple-Q Inc. BBS' - Vince Crosdale This demonstration will give the members the opportunity to have a look within the Bulletin Board System (BBS) operated by Apple-Q Inc. with the SysOp (System Operator) as their guide. Due to the size of the BBS, a total coverage will not be possible, but it will be endeavored to cover the main parts of the system. Usage of a capture buffer on the remote machine will enable recording of the total session onto disk, and these disks will be available to the members after the demonstration at a cost of $1. July ‘Choosing Quality Educational’ Software’ - Rob Neary from RAMWare August Joe Altoff from Power-Up Technology demonstrating Software and Peripherals manufactured and imported by his company. The Committee has also approached other organisations and individuals in regards to offering their time and resources to giving a demonstration to the members, and we have three more demonstrations organised, with details of these to be finalized and published in the very near future. L also take this opportunity to remind members of two other changes within the club : No Smoking within the premises on Open Days. This decision is in line with current Education and State Government Policy of not allowing smoking within its premises. Membership Fees for Apple-Q Inc. Membership fees for Apple-Q Inc. Have been restructured. There is no longer a student membership rate, and the other fees have increased owing to higher costs involved in providing services to the club members. The fees are: Joining Fees: $10.00 Adult $5.00 Students and Associate Members (BBS only) Membership Fees: $25.00 per year $50.00 per year (Corporate members) $10.00 per year (Associate Member - BBS only) You may now appreciate why I felt that the definition of the word CHANGE was an appropriate start to this article, Major changes have occurred within the group, and we are currently looking at ways of improving on these changes further. We have organised the meetings for the club for the remainder of this year, and have been approached with suggestions for the early stages of next year. These people all want to come and talk to YOU, the members. I hope to see you all there. Editorial by Dale Rodgie It has been a busy month this past month. As you will notice, as well as changes to the club meetings, the newsletter has changed. We are trying this new format and would like to know what you think of the reduced size. I have increased the font size of the text so it is now slightly larger than in the last edition. The text is accually 88% of its orginal size, however, | have increased the font size by 20%. This edition was printed on a B3 size paper while the last newsletter was printed on an A4 size paper. Using the B3 paper, we can (or should I say the Hooper Centre can) staple the pages onto a handy booklet. The newsletter is now sent out a week earlier, to give you time to arrange to be a part of the meeting. I would be grateful for any comments and you can send then to The Editor, P.O. Box 6375, Gold Coast Mail Centre, Bundall 4217 or tell a committee member at the Open Day. Trading Table Bargins! In the last edition of Apple-Bug I mentioned a Tractor Unit for a Epson LQ600 printer. Well it is actually for an Epson LQ800 printer. The mouse mats sold out last month, so I will try to get some more at that great low price. As well as our stocks of Disks and Disk Boxes we have this month: Tractor Unit for Epson LQ800 printer $20.00 o.n.o. Apple Modem 300/1200 acc. Kit (IIc) $10.00 o.n.o. Apple DMP Cables $10.00 o.n.o. Apple-Bug - 5 Programming Competition by Brett Dutton Well | suppose you would like to know the results of the last programming competition? There were a total of three entries, one for the menu problem, and two for the mathematics problem. Unfortunately, the two best programs were submitted by the same person and he can not recieve two prizes. But in the junior section an entry was submitted, and although the accuracy wasn't to the full amount of decimal places 1 have become used to, it worked reasonably well, with a bit of humor thrown in. Both of the entries to the competition will be available to you from the software library for your scrutiny. The winner with the best solutions was Robin Craig (Membership Number 280) from Runaway Bay. He submitted answers to both problems and Robin has received his copy of Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Congratulations and well done on excelent programs. The documentation and the programming was very well done. The other prize winner Nathan Keynes (Membership Number 222) was also very good, but you will have to do a little more commenting. But congratulations for a great program. Nathan has received his copy of Electronic Magazine for his effort. Keep it up! Since | only recieved only two entries | am Apple DB Master Professional Update A new version of DB Master Professional will be released soon. This version has some "bugs" fixed, and some new features. New features include an “auto increment key field” which consecutively numbers records. A "skip this record” command has been added to report generator. Some of the options in the “Print Time Menu" have been included in the "printer format". Also the Global Editor and Import and Export Rules have new options added. This update is free if you have recently bought DB Master Professional, otherwise the upgrade is available for a small fee. For more information, contact Stone Edge Technologies Inc., P.O. Box 3200, Maple Glen, PA 19002, U.S.A. Phone 0011- 1-215-641-1825 New BBS on the Gold Coast The House of Hawk BBS has been running for a few months on the Gold Coast. It is an Apple board and is available between the hours of 8.00 p.m. and assuming that | didn't give enough time for the busier Programmers in the club, so in an effort to get more entries in, I have extended it for another month. (I also couldn't come up with another problem.) So to recap on the last problem, | would like a program that encrypts (scrambles) a text file. This has many uses if you would like to protect your files. The Program must encrypt a text file, and be able to unencrypt the file. So unless all the programmers out there want Robin and Nathan to be winning all the time, get your fingers tapping. Deadline now is for the July meeting. Magazine Give-away As the role of hard copy librarian, you are probably aware of the magazine give-away, well after looking in the library, there will be more magazine give-aways next month (ideal for the Apple II owners). J am interested in the books you would like to see in our library. I have had a few requests for ProDOS starters manuals, Machine language for the GS (65816 CPU), DOS manuals. So 1 am open to suggestions. Sheryl] Mann is going to have a questionair about what software you would like to see, so you could just add to that the books or magazines you would like to see. News 6.00 a.m. weekdays and 8.00 p.m. and 8.00 a.m. weekends. House of Hawk will accept baud rates of 300 and 1200. It use GBBS software the same as the Apple-Q BBS. The world of House of Hawk is open to you by phoning (075) 91-6357. 1989 Apple Developers Conference Apple Computer is holding another developers conference on July 15-19 at the Hyatt Regency in Adelaide. The conference will include Breakout sessions on New Macintosh System Software, Development Tools, Advanced Debugging, CL/1 Toolkit, Multimedia Technologies, Networking, ‘Communications, A/UX (Macintosh UNIX), Product Marketing. Developers also have an opportunity to talk about product development, problems and solutions. The costs for the conference start at $580.00 (twin share accommodation) and for more information see Dale Rodgic or contact Apple in Sydney on (02) 452-8000. Apple-Bug - 6 Apple IIGS System Software 5.0 Last month the new version of the Apple IIGS System Disk was announced at the Appiefest in Boston, U.S.A. This version of the System Disk is the first 16 bit operating system that can operate over an Appletalk network. On previous versions of System Disk, the Appletalk software was an 8 bit program. This means you will be able to access the Appletalk network from the GS Finder. Other features include new Expressload development tools. Developers can use the Expressload tools to greatly increase the loading speed of programs. Also an improved SCSI driver that will increase the access time for Hard Drives and the CD- ROM. Switching from GS/OS to Prodos 8 (and back) will be quicker. A new graphic based Control Panel has been developed. Many of the Tools have been rewritten to increase speed. Speaking of Speed Both Zip Technologies (makers of the Zip Chip) and Bits & Pieces (makers of the Rocket Chip) are planning to release new faster version of their chips in the new year. A new faster version of Transwarp GS is in the works and Zip Technologies and Bits & Pieces are also working on accelerators forthe IIGS. Apple hit by Virus Apple Computer Australia is the latest victim of the NVIR virus found on Macintosh computers. Apple sent it's dealers a disk containing System 6.03 and Hypercard version 1.2.2. This disk contained the NVIR virus. If you have received a copy of this disk from a dealer, check the disk with a virus checker. Appleworks GS Support Group Appleworks GS users will be glad to know that a group called the Appleworks GS Support Group has formed in Sydney. They already have a number of disks full of files available. The membership fee is $50.00 a year, however, at the time of printing I do not have their address. Keep reading Apple News for the address. Mouse Pads with a Difference Now you can buy 2 mouse pad that is covered in a full colour computer graphic. A number of designs are available and they cost $25.00 (7.5 x 9.75 inches) or $30.00 (9.5 x 9.75 inches). They are available from Computer Drive, 222 Kings Way, South Melbourne - Phone (03) 690-1689. Disk of the Month We have another two Disks of the Month this month. The first is the GS/OS Utilities Disk and the second is the Appleworks/Prodos Utilities Disk. Since we have the Prodos and Appleworks disks of the month, I have found some more great PD software that fit into those two categories. Not enough Prodos or Appleworks utilities to fill a disk, so I placed them together on the same disk. The GS/OS Utilities Disk is another first for "Disk of the Month". The GS/OS operating system takes up half of the 800K disk. This just leaves 400K for programs. However, this disk is a DOSless disk - giving more room for some fantastic utilities for the Gs. How to Order On the back page of the newsletter is an order form for Disk of the Month, Eamon Games and other Public Domain software. Using the form, you can order the disks by mail or you can order the disks and pick them up at the meeting. You can also order them at the Software Library desk just as you enter through the front door. Prices for Disk of the Month are: with Disk — without Disk 5.25 inch $5.00 $4.00 3.5 inch $8.00 $5.00 When ordering by Mail Order, remember to include $2.00 to cover postage and packaging. Dos 3.3 Utilities Disk Bug Fix Last meeting I noticed that the Dos 3.3 Utility Disk did not work on Apple Il+'s. I don't know why but I have a patch. Boot a Dos 3.3 disk and enter Applesoft. Then insert the Dos 3.3 Utility Disk (side 1) and type: NEW 10 2?CHR$ (4) ;"RUN MENU" SAVE P.O. BOX 721 SOUTH BRISBANE The boot program I had written that displays a Hires picture does not work on a Il+, so this patch wipes this program and runs the menu program. GS/OS Utilities Disk Diced - This is the best icon editor I have seen. You C Members can advertise for free in the Apple-Bug. ) can change the size of icons without loosing the image, add more icons to a filc, move the image in the icon boundries, change a single colour in the whole image with one click. All these features are not available with Apple's icon editor. Diced also prints text files, launches programs, saves icons as source code. Back Rest - Using Back Rest, you can save your Control Panel settings to disk and restore them froma file on the disk. Handy with programs that require certain Control Panel settings. Install DA - We have some desk accessories on this disk. So I have included this program that loads both Classic and New desk accessories and installs them. No need to copy desk accessories into the DESK.ACCS folder. Nifty List - This shareware CDA is just what any GS programmer needs. With Nifty List you can disassemble memory with tool and operating system calls displayed. An online help is available for Tool calls. Massa - Master.CDA strikes again! This is a collection of CDA's in one CDA. This was put together using Master.CDA. Mangler DA - You want more control over the Memory manager, then this one is for you. When you enter this CDA, type COMMANDS for a list of commands available. Analog Clock - I have seen plenty of digital clocks for the GS but this is the first analog clock. Includes a second hand, Enigma - This NDA is a game much like Master Mind, however it tums the desktop colour to black. Font Viewer - I have found this very handy in Appleworks GS. You can display different fonts and see what characters and symbals are in the font. You can also cut a character from this NDA to add to your document. Master.NDA - If you like NDA's like | do, you soon find only the first 20 are displayed in the pull- down menu. Master NDA allows you to scroll through the NDA list to select the one you want. This is shareware. Meltdown II - The old Meltdown NDA has been revised. It is slightly faster and has a few bugs fixed. Includes source code. Apple-Bug - 7 Membar - An interesting way to find out how much memory is available on your machine, Includes source code. Screen Saver - There are a few screen savers for the GS but this one allows you to select the time before it blanks the screen. Show Text - You can now display text files from within the desktop with this one. Desktop Fix - Change the colour of the GS Finders desktop with this program. Font Doctor - This is the first font editor I have seen for the GS. Modify the fonts used by may of those GS programs. Font Invert - Like reading up side down? Well this one is for you. Font Invert tums a font up side down. Type Face - This one displays fonts on the screen. Animated Watch - This initialization file moves the hands on the watch cursor. Install ROM CDA's - The GS ROM has two built in CDA's, however, you needed to go into monitor to activate them - until now. Copy this one into the SYSTEM.SETUP folder and reboot. Mac Trans GS - Convert Macintosh files from a 400K Mac disk to Prodos. Animation Displayer - Paintworks Plus allows you to create a animated picture. However, until now, you had to boot up Paintworks to watch them. Includes six animated pictures. Appleworks/ Prodos Utilities Disk As with last months Prodos Pot-Pourti Disk, Windows and Dogpaw appear on this disk also. SEG.PR Editor - Customize the Appleworks printer commands, have three custom printers or more. Menu driven. Columnist - Converts Appleworks or text files into columns. The finished file is then saved back to disk as either an Appleworks or text file. Mousetext Demo - Copy MouseText characters from this demo and paste in your own documents. ShrinkIt - Shrinklt compacts files or disks into an arcival file. Great for modem users and for file storage. Use a file interface simular to the GS. Highly recommended. Appleworks Patch Setting Appleworks for a A4 paper default. The default page length APPLE WORKS is 11.0 inches. The length of A4 paper is 297mm (11.69 inches). So we want to patch APPLEWORKS so 11.7 inches is the default value. throughout This will save us from invoking <Apple>-O and setting PL for each document. All the lengths, margins are coded as follows. 11.0 becomes 110 becomes hexadecimal 6E. 11.7 becomes 117 becomes hex 75. So we hunt through SEG.M1 and change all the A9 6E instructions to A9 Apple-Bug - 8 75. For Appleworks 1.3 From Applesoft Basic type: UNLOCK SEG.M1 CALL -151 300:75 BSAVE SEG.M1,A$300,L$1,B$5964, T$00 (this does it for AWP) BSAVE SEG.M1,A$300,L$1,B$CD05, T$00 (this does it for ASP) BSAVE SEG.M1,A$300,L$1,B$0237, T$00 (this does it for ADB) BSAVE SEG.M1,A$300, 1$1,B$9002,T$00 LOCK SEG.M1 I am not sure why $75 is saved to location $9002. If you are cautious, you could omit this one. If you work it out, tell me. For Appleworks 2.0 Use the same steps as for version 1.3, however, use the following addresses in place of addresses $5964, $CD05, $0237 and $9002. The addresses are: $5C81, $C782, $0237 and $9932 The wise will apply these patches only on a copy of the PROGRAM disk and check these addresses using BLOAD and examining $300. Appleworks Tips EDITOR: Here are some helpful hints for users of the Apple Ile version of Appleworks. This article is copyright by the Claris Corporation - reprinted with permission. Where possible, I have added more information to these tips. Getting to Main Menu Fast If you have fallen into the habit of pressing the <ESC> key umpteen times to get back to the main menu from some other section of Appleworks, then you have worn out your keyboard for nothing. Here is the quickest way: Press <Apple>-Q, even if there is only one file on the desktop, and then press <ESC>. That's it. You are at the main menu. Choosing from a menu Apart from full screen menus, Appleworks at different times gives a menu at the bottom line of the screen. Most people use the arrow keys to select between the options. A quicker way is to simply type the first character of you chosen option. Try it, you'll never look back. What's a Sticky Space? Although automatic wrap around is an advantage in word processors, sometimes it takes place in odd circumstances. e.g. If you were to type "Appleworks was written by Mr. R.J. Lissner". It would not be appropriate to have the title on one line and the name on the next. Appleworks simply managed to fit "Mr." on one line and so it did. To ensure that Appleworks ignores spaces between items that should not be broken, use a sticky space to separate the items. Use <Apple>-<Space> instead of the <Space> bar alone. Page Numbering Using the Header Begin or Footer Begin command together with the Print Page Number command, page numbers may by printed on each page, including or excluding the first page. To place the page number at the top of each page, including the first page. Move your cursor to the top of the document - try <Apple>-1. Type <Apple>-O for printer options, Then type "HE" and <Return> for a header, now type "PP" and <Return> and press <ESC> to return to your document. The words " --Page Header" will appear on the line just above the cursor. The text on that line (with the cursor) will be printed at the top of each page. To print the page number on all but the first page, position your cursor on the first line of the second page of the document and follow the steps above. Use <Apple>-K to work out where the top of the second page is. Calculator Desk Accessory If you are always looking for your calculator while using Appleworks, don't. Whenever using Appleworks, add a spreadsheet file "from scratch" to the desktop and call it "AAA". Now, suppose you wish to find the product of 17.5 and 11.3. Press <Apple>-Q then <Return>, to select the spreadsheet. Type the problem and Appleworks will return the solution immediately. Use <Apple>-Q to retum to your application. Value and Label Layout Appleworks tends to be tricky when selecting to control the value or label layout in a spreadsheet. The problem: Suppose column C will contain values whose format should be dollars. Suppose also that there are entries in cells C1 to C8. Selecting to control the layout of the entire column. C, (<Apple>-L then choosing column) will change the appearance of the existing entries. If however, new entries are entered, say in cell C9 and C10, these entries will not appear in dollar format inspite of the layout set. The solution: Do not select rows or columns when changing the layout. Select Block instead and highlight the largest possible area you intend using. ‘The block for the above problem could have been cells Ci t0 C20 for example. Order of Operations - never from right to left! Care must be taken when using calculated categories in a report format. Appleworks calculates formulas during a report strictly from left to right. Not even using brackets will alter that fact, Date Categories - don't use DOB! Many teachers use the category name DOB for a category containing date of birth. As a result, they are unable to sort the file chronologically by the student's date of birth, If a category name includes the word DATE, Appleworks will allow a chronological sort on that category. Try it, you'll never look back, Apple-Bug - 9 Sorting Names To ensure a student database in arranged correctly, sort the file by given names, then by surnames. This will ensure that any two students sharing the same last sumame appear in the correct order. If you wish to list students by their sex (e.g. all females followed by all males), sort by given name, sumame then by sex (from A to Z). Text Files When printing an Appleworks word processor file to a text file, Appleworks places a carriage retum at the end of each line. No calculated categories or totals are printed to a text file. Spreadsheets cannot import text files. Pathnames to Remember If you have trouble remembering the name of a pathname or you have little experience with Prodos, then format a disk and call it TRANSFER. Use TF and DIF as file names whenever you wish to printto a text ora DIF file. In this way, when you need to print toa text file, the TRANSFER disk is placed in the disk drive and the pathname is entered as /TRANSFER/ TF. If a DIF file is required, the pathname would be / TRANSFER/DIF.
