May 1991 Resource Central Hard drive prices are falling! We're now able to offer you a fully assembled SCSI (‘scuzzy’) hard drive, with 25 per cent more capacity than the hard drive kit we've sold in the past, for $50 less than the kit price. Or a fully assembled SCSI removable media hard drive with the same mechanism we've sold in the past, for $175 less than the kit price. Go figure. Our two new drives are both the same size: 25 cm wide, 25 cm deep, and 6 cm high (a little less than 10 x 10 x 2.5, for those of you who pre- fer inches). Both models are the same color: Apple IIgs platinum. Both operate on all AC voltages between 90v and 240v (all that is necessary outside North America is to use the supplied North American power cord with an appropriate plug adaptor). Both drives come with a I-year warranty. Both models have in-use and power-on lights, two switched power outlets, two 50-pin Centronic style SCSI connectors, a shielded SCSI cable that attaches to one of the connectors, and a SCSI terminator that attaches to the other. Both have a push button SCSI ID number selector and FCC certification. Both drives have heads that ‘auto-park’ on shutdown; no additional Park command is necessary or advisable. But best of all, both models have a nifty Resource Central logo on the front and a ton of Resource Central software and data files installed and ready to go. The 100 Megabyte drive comes with a 105 Meg (unformatted) Quantum subassembly. Quantum systems have an internal DisCashe™ RAM cache that allows a fast 1:1 intervieave (10.7 to 12 ms effective access time). Quantum drives have a 50,000 hour Mean Time Between Failure rating. Our 42 Megabyte removable drive comes with the same 44 Megabyte (unformatted) Syquest subassembly we've sold in the past and is an ideal unit for backing up your main hard drive. These drives have a 20 ms average access time. These hard drives will work on any Apple Ile, Apple ligs, or Laser computer. If you dont already have a SCSI controller card, you'll need to get one and plug it into one of your slots so that you have something to connect the hard drive to. These drives will also work with a Macintosh or any other SCSI-capable system, however, you may need additional formatting software and/or drivers and you won't be able to access the data we include on the drive unless you have an Apple Il- based system. If you need a SCSI card, we have the largest selection available anywhere. CVTech's RAMfast is our favorite. It provides the fastest data transfer speeds by far. It works by keeping your most frequently accessed data in a RAM cache on the card itself. If you'd prefer to save some money, we also have Apple's High Speed SCSI Card, which sets = 42 Meg Removable $699 re packed hard drives from: 100 Meg $599 the standard for SCSI cards. We also carry the Cirtech SCSI Card, which is the only card that comes with software that allows you to use your SCSI drive with DOS 3.3, Apple Pascal, or CP/M. And it's the only card that has software that allows you to give several computers private partitions on a single hard drive (each computer needs its own Cirtech SCSI card). However, Cirtech's card isn't compatible with our 42 Meg SyQuest drive. Under GS/OS you can access all 100 Megabytes of our new Quantum drive with any of these cards. When running ProDOS 8 programs, however, the Apple card can access just two of the four ‘partitions’ on the drive unless you install it in Slot 5. This is sometimes impractical, particularly on the Apple ligs. If access to more than two partitions under ProDOS 8 is important to you, we recommend the RAMfast or Cirtech cards. No matter which SCSI card or disk drive you buy, we'll format it for you, install Apple's latest system software, and copy over some great files that are yours to keep, including the full text of every issue of Open- Apple/A2-Central ever published, a complete set of Apple technical notes in text files, the most complete collection of Apple llgs icons ever assembled, sample issues of 8/16-Central, Stack-Central, TimeOut- Central, and Hyperbole, and a year’s worth of A2-Central on disk. This last item alone regularly sells for $60 and includes numerous public domain and shareware programs, including utilities, games, patches, font and icon editors~even a word processor! If you haven't yet purchased a hard drive, now's a good time to find out what speed and space are all about. Apple Ilgs owners in particular will find living without a hard drive increasingly difficult, as new software, such as Apple's new HyperCard Iigs, sometimes requires a hard drive. And don't put off buying a hard drive now because you may buy another kind of computer in the future~if you do decide to move to another system, our SCSI hard drives will move with you. If you already have a hard drive do you back it up regularly? The easiest, cleanest, safest way to back up your hard drive is to copy everything onto a removable 40-plus Megabyte cartridge. Backup is fast and the cartridge will even fit inside a safe deposit box. At long last we've located just what you're looking for: the CompuShare Productivity Series from CompuShare Press. Amazingly, we'd never heard of these folks until a few weeks ago and they'd never heard of us-the long list of companies selling Apple Ilgs-related products in their Your llgs Guide doesnt even mention us. Nonetheless, CompuShare's books are just what we ve been looking for. Here's what the series includes: Your llgs Guide First published in 1989 and currently in its second edition, Your llgs Guide is a good overview of what anyone needs to know to get started with an Apple llgs. An overview chapter covers essentials such as memory expansion cards, the Desktop, Desk Accessories, and the Control Panel. Entire chapters are devoted to the 1's Books - monitor, the keyboard, the mouse, 5.25 drives, 3.5 drives, hard drives, serial ports, printers, modems, and system software. Most chapters discuss available options, tell how the system under study works, and give some troubleshooting specifics. The book also includes an extensive glossary of Apple ligs terms, an index, a list of product recommendations and the telephone numbers of more than 100 companies that supply Apple ligs- related products co-004 Your ligs Guide Hard Drive Guide CompuShare's Personal Computer Report #1 is an introduction to hard drives. The report covers such information as how a hard drive works; what formatting, initialization, and interleave are; what the Small Computer Systems Interface (SCSI) is , why it's important, and how to troubleshoot problems; drive backup and recovery; drive organization; and other tips. This Hard Drive Guide also includes bonus chapters on ImageWriter I! maintenance, using ‘AppleWorks GS, and on GS/OS, co-001 Hard Drive Guide $21.95 $14.95 Telecommunications Guide CompuShare's Personal Computer Report #2 is an introduction to telecommunications. The report gives you the fundamentals of telecommunications and tells you how to select a modem and telecommunications software. You'll learn about serial communications, parity, half and full duplex, and packet switching in a few quick pages. The book also discusses bulletin boards (including where to get good lists of BBS phone numbers) and online information services. The final chapter explains the Hayes AT command set used by most popular modems. cO-002 Telecommunications Guide GS/OS Guide CompuShare's Personal Computer Report #3 is an introduction to GS/OS. The report covers such fundamentals as why you might want to create a RAMdisk with your extra ligs system memory and how to do it, how to copy files from one disk drive to another, and the differences between the various versions of GS/OS. co-003 GS/OS Guide $12.95 $9.95 Great Utilities and Games from France For the last couple of years, some of the most astounding software for the Apple IIgs has been produced in France. Demonstration and shareware versions of some of these products have dazzled user groups and conference attendees in the U.S. and other parts of the world. Now the authors have arranged to provide English-language manuals for their products and we've arranged to distribute their products for them. Photonix Il Photonix is the fastest 5.5 disk copy program we've found anywhere. It can make single copies or you can use it in mass production mode to make multiple copies of a single disk (we use it ourselves to copy thousands of disks a month). Photonix I! is a new commercial version of the original shareware Photonix. It requires an Apple ligs with at least 1.128 Megabytes of memory and at least one Apple 5.5 drive (Unidisk and AMR 3.5s aren't supported). Unlike the original Photonix, Photonix I works on all ROM versions of the ligs and can be installed on a hard drive. Photonix II allows you to contro! the interleave on the disks you copy, will reorganize the files to speed access if you choose, and will check your source disk for several viruses. You can also control the number of retries Photonix I should attempt after an error. It will also copy 400K and 800K Macintosh disks. ‘'TB-009 Photonix II Bouncing Bluster Il Bouncing Bluster I has been a big hit among our Nintendo-satiated game reviewers. It's a distant Apple ligs-only descendant of Brick Out, the game Steve Wozniak wanted to play so much that he designed and built the original Apple II to play it on. Like Brick Out, there's a ball and a paddle and bricks that break when the ball hits them. Beyond that simple comparison, however, comparing these two games is like contrasting a bullock cart with the space shuttle. $45.00 Bouncing Bluster II has several kinds of bricks. Some break, some don't, and some send out little pills that change the characteristics of the paddle. For example, one pill makes the paddle bigger and another allows you to move it up and down the screen as well as across the bottom. The program takes full advantage of the graphic and sound capabilities of the Apple ligs. But that's just the beginning, Bouncing Bluster Jlcomes with a complete construction kit that allows you to create your own multi-level, multi featured games. It's been a hit at our house and it will be one at yours, too. TB-010 Bouncing Bluster I Space Shark Space Shark is the fastest arcade game ever written for the Apple ligs. It's a Defender-type shoot+the-aliens game with 15 levels of difficulty. It can be played with either the mouse or with a joystick. TB-011 $59.00 Space Shark $49.00 Updates and Price Changes _ _ ProSel-16 ‘As mentioned in last month's A2-Central, the addition of new utilities, including an appointment calendar, text editor, and calculator, as well enhancements to the backup and disk optimization utilities, have crowded the documentation off the ProSel-16 distribution disk Consequently, ProSel 16 is being released in an entirely new version, which for the first time includes printed documentation. ProSel is a program we've been giving our highest recommendation to since way back in Volume 1. ProSel began as a badly-needed program selector for ProDOS, but has grown into the most comprehensive disk utility program available for any computer anywhere. You can use il to do standard stuff such as copy and delete files and backup hard disks, you can use it to do unusual stuff like undelete files and sort directories, and you can use it to do magic stuff like fix damaged disks and automatically run programs on a schedule you select. The Ile/lIc version is still disk-based and still $40, the new GS/0S version is $85. If you already own ProSel and you want an update, please contact Bredon directly. We are not allowed to handle updates. Update prices were outlined on the front page of last month's newsletter, GB-001 ProSel 8 $40.00 GB-002 ProSel 16 $85.00 Hard Drives ona card A weak dollar caused us to raise the price of Cirtech’s internal hard drives last month; Cirtech responded by lowering the price of its drives Continued on page 4 Kansas City Tuesday - Sunday July 16 to 21 Join us again this year in Kansas City for the THIRD annual A2-Central Summer Conference.
