Welcome to the third edition of AppleMagazine. The right
magazine for the right audience. In this edition we continue to
bring you you the most relevant news about the World of Apple.
Teachers all over the world grapple with the difficult task of how to
keep their students interested in the lesson plan in an era where
the siren song of technology can be heard loud and clear wherever
students are. So why not bring technology and its allure to the
classroom? Our piece, “Why use the iPad in the Classroom?” offers
ways for teachers and educators to make use of Apple’s trend
setting tablet. A must read for parents and teachers alike.
From education we move to technological matters, with three
articles in sequence to quench your tech thirst. We begin with a
discussion on Adobe’s recent announcement not to support Flash
for mobile devices and what that move means for Apple users.
Second, we have a report about Siri and what it is like to interact
with Apple's electronic assistant. Finally, we soeculate whether
Apple is moving away from physical media. We know that most of
you out there certainly are.
ES REVIEW, TECHMAC, FINANCE, APPLE SOCIETY AND MORE Next is our Cover story theme: Apple’s CEO Tim Cook. In three
4 articles, we offer our take on the current status of Tim Cook. Who
is he? What has he done for Apple so far? Is everybody on board
with him? How does he treat his employees? We even have Mr.
Wozniak’s take on how Apple is being run. Don’ t miss it.
Inside Apps and iTunes Review are here again to bring you the
latest in games, apps, music and videos. Do you want to know
what is worth spending your hard-earned paycheck on? Check out
both articles to find out.
Our TechMac area has two great artcles. One is an autopsy of
the new iPhone 4S. Discover what is inside Apple’s new flagship
smartphone. The other article is a tutorial on the post-processing
camera features of iOS 5. Find out what you can do with your
photos without having to resort to third-party software.
As usual we end with Finance and Apple Society. The former
examines the effect the global economic crisis has had in the world
of tech, and the latter analyzes the opposite approach that Apple
and PC companies use to create their hardware and software.

We hope you enjoy what is in store for you in this issue.

MULTIMEDIA INSTRUCTION
The iPad is not much different from a
computer. It is a computer, just smaller
and a lot more portable. The iPad’s tactile
interface and abundant app support makes
it perfect for multimedia instruction. Since
learning styles vary amongst all students,
the traditional straightforward teacher
lecture is not the best way to help all
students learn facts, concepts, and skills.
A combination of visual media, interactive
discussions, constructive feedback and
evaluation are more pertinent to a
generation of students who are growing up
in the age of the Internet, smartphones,
and digital tablets like the iPad.
With the iPad 2 hooked up to a video
projector or television, teachers get the
entire World Wide Web at their fingertips.
A lesson on the Great Depression and
the reading of The Grapes of Wrath, for
example, can easily be enhanced with
related short archives and documentary
video clips, Google image searches of the
time period, along with an online forum
of teacher and student comments and
responses about the subject or the book.
The portability of the iPad, along with
its long-lasting battery, makes it an ideal
device for the classroom since it can be
used like a laptop or desktop computer, as
well as a tablet. Instructional materials can
easily be added, taking the place of several
file drawers and cabinets of documents,
videos, lesson plans, and handouts. | would
create accounts on various websites such
as Wikipedia and YouTube specifically for
classroom instruction material. Curriculum
related videos, songs, famous oral
presentations, and current TV news clips
would be downloaded to support daily
lessons and activities.
iOS APPS
The iTunes App Store is chockfull
of apps for all grade levels of courses,
including science, math, reading, language
arts, social science, art, and geography.
Long-established resources like PBS Kids,
National Geographic, Time and Newsweek
magazines have produced their own
content-rich applications, as well as
thousands of picture books and literature
in e-book format.
For example, an iPad app called TIME
Populist (Free) is a collection of weekly lists
of hundreds of popular culture movies,
music, books, TV shows, and video games
that could supplement language arts and
social science lessons. The Civil War Today
($5.99) is also a multimedia, content-based
app featuring maps from battlegrounds,
photo galleries, newspaper headlines of
the time period, and personal letters and
diary entries from figures like Abraham
Lincoln, Horatio Nelson Taft, and Mary
Chestnut. Numerous art and drawing apps,
along with a stylus pen, can be used not
only for artistic instruction, but for also
projecting handwritten markings and other
content on a screen.
IPADS FOR EVERY STUDENT
The ideal way to use iPads in the
classroom is to equip each student with a
tablet. USA Today reported in September
that Woodford County High was the first
public high school to give each of its 1,250
students an iPad. Numerous schools across
the US have begun pilot programs to see
how a cart of 28 to 30 iPads could be
shared from classroom to classroom and
integrated within the curriculum.
:

The New York Times also reported that
more than 200 Chicago public schools
applied for a $450,000 grant to purchase
iPads, and the “Virginia Department of
Education is overseeing a $150,000 iPad
initiative that has replaced history and
Advanced Placement biology textbooks
at 11 schools.” And in California at least
six middle schools are using the first
“iPad-only algebra course, developed by
Houghton Mifflin Harcourt,” a textbook
publisher.
Many school
administrators see
the use of iPad asa
long-term investment
for cutting costs in
textbooks, educational
software, and other
media resources.
As textbook
publishers begin to offer
e-book versions of their
publications, it means
significantly reducing
the amount of paper
and ink for publishing;
cutting shipping costs
for sending textbooks to
schools and universities,
and keeping textbooks current by revising
and updating content in a shorter amount
of time.
For the elementary level, Apple and
other ebook companies are already selling
Read and Listen ebooks so that young
readers can follow along as the words
are read aloud. Likewise, interactive
ebook-formatted textbooks can include
multimedia resources embedded within
the software and/or linked to content on
the web.
The New York
Times also
reported that
more than 200
Chicago public
schools applied
for a $450,000
grant to
purchase iPads
Apple’s own word processing and
desktop layout program, Pages, can be
used by teachers to write their own
courses of study, manuals, children’s books,
handout packets, which can be exported
into ePub, the format for Apple’s iBooks
app.
iPads are of course cheaper and more
versatile than regular computers, and
they allow for both cooperative and
collaborative teaching and learning to
take place. Groups of students could, for
example, do research
on a specified topic and
offer up their results for
discussion and further
study.
Using well developed
PDF reader apps
like iAnnotate and
GoodReader, teachers
could teach students
strategies for annotating
text to increase reading
comprehension and
critical thinking skills. With
iAnnotate, for example,
annotations made within
selected PDFs can be
exported via email and
become study aides for students.
Numerous applications for teaching
and supporting math lessons are already
available for the iPad as well. The same
goes for history, geography, and other
social science tools and lessons. Many of
these apps contain lessons and exercises
that offer students immediate feedback
to lessons and exercises. Some apps are
developed as games that might better help
students learn the subject matter.
The mobile size of the iPad is easier
to use than even laptops or notebooks.
However, based on my experience, the iPad
is not always ideal for creating content,
such as writing research papers, complex
spreadsheets or Keynote presentations.
The iPad is most practical as a tactile,
interactive media consumption device.
How iPads will be used in the classroom
largely depends on their availability to
teachers and students. There’s of course a
big difference between having an iPad for
every enrolled student, and only having a
cart of 35 iPads to be checked out on an
individual basis.
Integrating iPads in the classroom
means considering supporting factors such
as availability and speed of internet access
throughout the school; the financial budget
for purchasing iPads, at a cost of $600-$750
apiece; and how they will be distributed
and shared if they are in limited supply.
Training teachers how to use the device,
and helping them locate resources that will
supplement the curriculum must also be
considered.
Educators will also have to show through
research how iPads improve teaching and
student academic performance in order to
justify the investment.
In the meantime, individual teachers
who own and use an iPad in the classroom
can visit sites like lpadeducators.ning.com,
ipadincschools.com, and emergingeatecnh.
com to share their strategies and
experiences with using the device which
may well become as universal to teaching
as blackboards and whiteboards.

When it became apparent that the iPhone,
iPod Touch and, subsequently, the iPad would
not support Adobe Flash, many felt that
Apple’s choice would consign their iOS devices
to irrelevance, but 18 months after the iPad’s
launch, Adobe has officially announced to
developers that it is to cease development for
Mobile Flash, in favour of focusing its efforts
on HTMLS. In a statement, Adobe wrote:
“Our future work with Flash on mobile
devices will be focused on enabling Flash
developers to package native apps with
Adobe AIR for all the major app stores. We
will no longer adapt Flash Player for mobile
devices to new browser, OS version or device
configurations. Some of our source code
licensees may opt to continue working on
and releasing their own implementations.
We will continue to support the current
Android and PlayBook configurations with
critical bug fixes and security updates.”
APPLE AND ADOBE’S PRIOR
RELATIONSHIP
If one were to look at the headlines
which have resulted from Apple’s not
allowing the use of Flash on iOS, it would
be easy to come to the conclusion that
Adobe and Apple are lifelong rivals.
However, the truth is far more interesting.
Apple and Adobe have a history of
working well together, and it could even
be argued that Apple gave Adobe its first
‘break’ by adopting Adobe's Postscript
language for the LaserWriter printer. In
addition, Apple invested heavily in Adobe
and controlled approximately 20% of
shares in the company for a significant
period. This friendship ultimately soured
due to Steve Jobs’ choice to single out
Flash as a poor product and subsequently
penning an article explaining Apple’s
reasons behind their anti-Flash stance,
Thoughts On Flash.

WHAT IS FLASH AND WHAT’S WRONG
WITH IT?
Adobe Flash is a multimedia cross-
platform browser-based application which
brings animations, video content and audio
to web pages, in addition to games, such
as those seen on Facebook. Supported
web browsers can contain a Flash plugin
and when that web browser encounters
content written for Flash, the content
will thus be displayed. Some users feel
that their Internet experience is enriched
by Flash, while many think of the plugin
as synonymous with annoying pop-up
advertisements. Whatever your opinion, it
seems reasonable to state that Flash in its
current form contains several significant and
inherent flaws.
Security firm Symantec has repeatedly
singled out Adobe’s Flash Player as
containing security weaknesses and indeed
Flash will often be the first point of attack
for would be hackers with nefarious
intentions. Just as importantly for most Mac

users is that Flash is very inefficient and is
known to slow down older Mac's, using up
significant CPU, RAM and battery resources
and often causing instability. By abandoning
Flash, even very old PowerPC Macs can once
again be useful for normal web browsing.
There have been accusations from
supporters of Flash that Apple only chose to
not support Flash because it could offer iOS
users a way of experiencing simple games
and apps outside the so-called ‘walled
garden’ that is the Apple-controlled App
Store and thus decrease Apple's control and
revenue.
While this may potentially be true, it’s a
simple matter of fact that adding Flash to an
iPad would decrease battery life significantly
and almost certainly result in reduced
overall performance - as can be shown by
Adobe’s failure in offering competing tablet
and smartphone makers a version of Mobile
Flash that works flawlessly.

LIVING WITHOUT FLASH
In his article, Thoughts On Flash, Jobs
states that most of the video missing to iOS
users from not having Flash will be made up
by HTML 5 and apps - though this did not
happen overnight, it has mostly come to
pass for mainstream media. There is already
a definite perception amongst users and the
entire industry that a good website should
not rely on Flash alone to deliver its content
and these feelings will increase significantly
in the light of Adobe’s dropping Mobile
Flash.
H.264 is a popular video compression
standard which all Blu-ray Disc players can
play and has also been adopted by Google,
Apple, Netflix, Vimeo and others. By making
use of H.264, HTML5 and apps, iOS devices
can remove the need for Flash entirely and
access video from such varied sources as
The New York Times, National Geographic,
Fox News, ESPN and many more. All of this
ensures that an iOS user will rarely find
himself wishing for Flash support.
Installed
Meanwhile, on OS X,
many Mac users choose to
install Flash-blocking browser
extensions such as those
seen in Safari’s Extensions
Gallery, to ensure their web
experience is streamlined
and free of invasive flash
animations, while still
benefiting from websites
where Flash is required. It is
interesting that such places are
becoming ever more rare and a look within
a website’s preferences will often uncover
settings to replace Flash with an alternative
method of media delivery.
i
THE FLASH-FREE ERA HAS BEGUN
In the short time since the iPad launch,
the Internet landscape has changed
significantly. Mobile devices are making up
an increasing market share of internet usage
and, as the tech industry and consumers
both turn their focus to highly portable,
low-power devices, the use of Flash on both
desktop and tablet seems to be decreasing.
We are not yet at the point where
Flash is never needed to view a web page
properly, but this now seems likely in the
near future. Will Flash still be considered
important in another eighteen months?
Perhaps, though the era which saw Flash as
a widespread and integral part of internet
browsing is clearly coming to an end.”

Steve Jobs famously stated that Apple
doesn’t bother with market research
because the customers don’t yet know what
they want - a bold approach and one which
brings to mind Henry Ford’s famous quote
regarding the first car he manufactured, “/f
I’d asked my customers what they wanted,
they'd have said a faster horse’.
When the 1998 iMac G3 launched,
Apple was criticized and even ridiculed by
some for declining to include a floppy drive.
Though the floppy disk’s small capacity had
marked it out as a media which would not
be around for very much longer, many felt
it to be too entrenched at that time to be
dropped from a home computer.
In the years which followed, however,
Apple’s decision was vindicated and though
floppy drives limped on in the PC market
for years and were maintained by some
Mac users for legacy software, they were
largely obsolete. If the rumours coming out
of Cupertino are true, Apple hopes to once
again use good timing to perform a similar
feat with the floppy disks successors - CD's
and DVD's.

It is when considering the MacBook Pro
that the question becomes more complex,

There is an unlikely but potentially

Just as the PowerBook and iBook evolved

DROPPING PHYSICAL MEDIA IS
INHERENT TO APPLE’S BUSINESS
PLAN
The trend toward consumers wishing
to purchase and consume media as
digital files seems only to be increasing
with time, and this can be seen with
the popularity of Apple’s offerings such
as iTunes, iBooks and Newsstand, in
addition to competing products like
Amazon's Kindle e-Book reader. Thus, it
is currently very unlikely that a consumer
shift back toward owning physical media
such as CD’s and DVD’s will take place on
a Widespread scale in the near future.
But ultimately, it is Apple’s own
business strategy which most strongly the
direction in which the company is headed.
Apple is highly invested in encouraging
its users to purchase and consume media
digitally through outlets like iTunes and
the App Store in order to ensure the
company maximum profit. Will Apple

SCHEME
Following a recent lawsuit settlement,
Apple has instigated an updated MagSafe
replacement scheme which covers the fraying
known to occur on some older ‘T’ style power
adapters for both MacBook and MacBook
Pro, known as ‘Strain Relief’. The company
has posted a support document on their
website which details the steps one needs to
take in order to benefit from this scheme.
Those who have previously purchased
a replacement ‘T’ style adapter
because of this fault may be eligible for
reimbursement which covers up to three
purchased adapters. The MagSafe Power
Adapter Settlement Website contains all
the relevant information and links to forms
which must be filled in addition to the
following text:
The settlement will provide a cash
payment if you are the original owner
(by purchase or gift) of certain Apple
MacBook or MacBook Pro computer
models (“Subject Computer”) or separately
purchased an Apple 60W or 85W MagSafe
MPM-1 (“T”) Power Adapter (“Adapter”),
your Adapter showed signs of Strain

three years following the initial purchase
of the Subject Computer or Adapter. If
the court approves the settlement, you
may be entitled to a cash payment in the
following amounts depending on whether
you purchased your Replacement Adapter
during the first, second or third year
following the initial retail purchase of the
Subject Computer or Adapter: (a) first year,
the actual amount you paid (excluding
taxes and shipping/handling fees) up to
a maximum of $79; (b) second year $50;
(c) third year $35. There is a limit of three

Cook sent out the e-mail, showed yet
another profitable quarter. iPhone sales
were slightly down, compared to the third
quarter, most likely because people were
waiting for the new iPhone 4S to come out
before they bought a new phone. However,
Mac and iPad sales set new records, with
$28 billion in sales.
Apple will likely see record iPhone sales
during this quarter, especially with the new
model being out just before holiday sales
kick off. Already, more than four million
iPhone 4S models have been sold, and
Cook is confident the iPhone will set all-
time records this quarter, particularly with
the Christmas holidays approaching.
And if that isn’t enough, iPads are flying
off the shelves. Apple has already sold 40
million iPads, Cook said, and he believes
“the tablet market will be larger than the
PC market.”
lf Apple’s Chinese sales take off, the
Cupertino, Calif. tech giant could see
even more sales next year. According
to Arstechnica, Cook says the Chinese
progress is “amazing.” Revenues from
China are up almost 300 percent, and in
the last quarter accounted for 16 percent
of Apple’s total revenue.

Even without Apple, Cook would have

he came to work at Apple in 1998, Cook

Compaq, IBM and Intelligent Electronics.
All that pales to his experience at

So when Cook arrived

According to Fortune, Cook met with his

And eventually, Cook came to be a vital

Cook told Jobs’ biographer, Walter

the Cupertino headquarters, and travels
worldwide to meet with manufacturers.
Apple’s new CEO has also continued to
focus on negotiations that will keep Apple
growing well into the future. For example,
Cook led talks with Verizon Wireless that
brought the iPhone to that carrier, and
also led Apple into developing the Chinese
market, which he describes as being “key”
to Apple’s future.
As memories of Jobs begin to fade, Cook
will have the challenge of making Apple his
own business. While Apple is at the top of
the charts right now with the iPhone and
iPad, new devices are fighting it every day.
Google’s Android is the top smartphone
operating system, and Apple's rivals, HTC,
Samsung and Motorola are all vying for
their chance to outsell the iPhone and the
iPad.
Cook will also have to face the
challenges posed through the numerous
court battles his company is involved in.
Jobs vehemently vowed to fight Android,
claiming the operating system stole
technology from Apple, and a battle-by-
proxy is being waged against companies
whose mobile devices use the Google
system.
The new CEO will also need to maintain
Apple's core staff of executives, all of
whom remained after Jobs death. Jonathan
lve, who often collaborated with Jobs on
design, oversees designers considered
as the best in the industry. Scott Forstall
is in charge of Apple’s mobile software,
Bob Mansfield remains with hardware
engineering and Peter Oppenheimer works
as Chief financial officer.
The core team has worked together for
years, and even though Jobs was the front
man for the company, that team doesn’t
appear to be going anywhere.
“The team here has an unparalleled
breadth and depth of talent and a culture
of innovation that Steve has driven in
the company,” Cook said in January.
“Excellence has become a habit.”
Meanwhile, industry watchers shouldn’t
expect Cook to become a “rock star” like
Jobs was, because he just isn’t that way.
Cook thrived under Jobs because he
remained calm and decisive in contrast to
Jobs’ emotional operating style -- but Cook
doesn’t want to be in the limelight like his
one-time boss was.
“Some people resent the fact that Steve
gets credit for everything, but I’ve never
given a rat’s ass about that,” Cook told
Bloomberg. “Frankly speaking, I'd prefer
my name never be in the paper.”
Cook ably showed in October, while
unveiling the iPhone 4S, that while he
doesn’t have Jobs’ showmanship, he does
have a quiet sense of power investors
could respond to well.
The new iPhone was put on display just
one day before Jobs’ died on Oct. 5, but
it’s likely Cook knew his mentor was near
the end when he displayed the new device.
That didn’t stop him from expressing
his delight in the iPhone 4S, or in the
company’s continuing success.
“This is my first product launch since
being named CEO -- I’m sure you didn’t
know that,” Cook dryly said when taking
the stage. “! love Apple and consider it the
privilege of a lifetime to have worked here
for 14 years and to assume this role.”

He also delighted in outlining his
company’s prowess, in the mobile market,

Cook said. “He (took)

Cook could come
to miss those kinds of
discussions as he moves forward, because
so far, he does not seem to yet have his
own partner, as he was with Jobs.
While Cook will likely miss his day-to-
day interactions with Jobs, that doesn’t
mean Apple should suffer much with him
at the helm. After all, he still has his core
32
team, and Apple already has several years’
worth of future projects in the works, so
even though Jobs has died, his visions will

Wozniak said Jobs’

The Apple co-founder also talked about

He said his friend left behind a legacy of

Wozniak left Apple in 1985, but has

APPLE LAUNCH
ITUNES MATCH
Apple have now made iTunes 10.5.1
available through OS X’s Software Update
and with it comes the hotly anticipated
iTunes Match subscription service.
Arriving a couple of weeks behind the
Originally stated goal of a late October
release, [Tunes Match will now enable US-
based subscribers to match their existing
iTunes Libraries with music which already
resides on Apple's vast servers. This music Is
then accessible from any compatible device
— all for $24.99 per year.
For those songs which Apple don't have
on their servers, [Tunes Match subscribers
are also allotted a generous 25,000 song
limit with which they can upload their songs
to the iCloud servers. However, there does
appear to be a snag for those who have very
large iTunes libraries — Ars Technica reports
that users who have a iTunes Library which
exceeds 25,000 songs not purchased via
iTunes are simply unable to sign up to the
service.
It is not yet clear at this point whether
Apple plan to make provisions for those with
more than 25,000 songs but as iTunes Match
is still in its infancy, we can likely expect a
forthcoming update to address this issue
and any other minor issues which arise.

3.2 pixel cameras were state-of-the-art, and 500px was a major
innovation that enabled photos to be displayed on CRT monitors.
This web-created experience is now available for the iPad and it is awesome. Imagine the most
incredible photo stream at your fingertips... that’s what this app is all about.
The whole online experience was translated into the iPad’s ‘touch’, and the result is truly
impressive. Through your fingertips, you can browse all categories, view details in full size and even
create slideshows with musical background using AirPlay.
Even if you are not a photographer, the site is a good way to see striking pictures in high quality.
uf ‘ unes ) Infact, you'll probably end up getting a camera and trying it out yourself! For photographers
already registered with 500px, this app will prove to be an excellent tool to showcase and share
photos, as well as get to know other people’s work.
Say ‘cheese’ and enjoy.

“A picture is worth a thousand words”.
Many have heard this popular adage,
especially the guys at News360, a small
company dedicated to changing the world of
news, trying to make people more informed,
in a faster and less stressful way. The
philosophy adopted by the developers is to
foster learning and broaden horizons.
The app not only aggregates news, but
also uses semantics and natural language
processes to search through more than 50
thousand companies, individuals, brands
and sites. Just one touch and the app takes you on an encyclopedic journey, following the same
principal of Wikipedia.
The app takes users to a filter that selects news by themes. You can create a profile joining all
your interests, requiring only that you log onto Facebook, Twitter, Google or an email account. Once
you create the profile, you can easily share stories you like on your favorite social network.
It’s a good call for those who want to see the world in a different light.

the app. In a matter of hours, they had collected $12.000
and the idea was in motion. This app is a great example of
the collaboration between talented artists and experienced
developers. The staff at Robot Media has already published
more than a hundred titles, most of them boasting significant
downloads.
The plot follows the life and adventures of little Jonas Berg, who discovers a
parallel world through a forgotten painting left in a dusty attic at his grandmother’s
home. Filled with mystery and fantasy, Jonas’ new world takes him through
indescribable adventures, which will help him overcome family problems.
The first chapter of the saga is available in seven languages, and the second

possible to purchase a Collector’s Edition through In-App Purchase, which will contain additional features such as
artwork & sketch mode, author commentary and additional artbook content.
Be it the free version or the collector’s edition, this app is a must. If Daniel Lieske’s work has made as much of an

OF REALITY |
Noted British author Richard Dawkins may have just
published yet another masterpiece. His latest tome,
The Magic of Reality: How We Know What's Really True,
attempts to explain the mysteries and questions surrounding
Science, modern and ancient myths of the Universe and
more. Different from his other acclaimed books, this one is
meant for children and teenagers.
In his new book, Richard discusses issues that most
adults, unfortunately, are not prepared to deal with when
asked by youngsters. Written in matter-of-factly, the
author addresses several topics, taking us on a trip to the
rediscovery of knowledge. The brainstorming starts with
tiny things, such as hydrogen and carbon atoms, but range
through Adam, DNA, mass and weight, reaching further
points such as the Doppler Effect, relative motion and
celestial bodies.
Despite the intricate subject matter, the book is easy
to read and the author is able to captivate the reader his
explanation of scientific issues. It is masterfully developed
and brilliantly illustrated, encompassing all aspects of
knowledge and exploiting thousands of questions that
help us better understand the world we live in. Dawkins
is an ethologist and an evolutionary biologist as well as
a professor at the University of California, Berkeley and
Oxford, where he taught Public Understanding of Science.
His books are widely read and often shed light on
important concepts of Evolutionary Biology, Humanism and
even religion. Two of his books are worth mentioning here:
The Selfish Gene (1976), which introduced the concept
of Memes (an idea, behavior or style that spreads from
person to person within a culture) and The God Delusion
(2006), which sold more than two million copies and was
translated into 31 languages, reaching best -seller status on
its publishing date.
If you are an inquisitive youngster, a father worried about
your kid’s intellectual development, or simply a book lover,
you are surely going to enjoy this book. Purchase it now
and unfold the mysteries of the Universe, the Earth and
ourselves

1st GENERATION
This week, Apple sent out emails
worldwide to registered owners of the
first generation iPod Nano, sold between
September ‘05 and December ’06.
The email states that an unlikely but
potentially dangerous manufacturing fault
with the Nano’s ageing battery could result
in the battery overheating. Apple suggests
that the owners of 1st generation iPod
Nano’s cease using them immediately
and ship the unit back to Apple for a free
replacement.

RECALLED BY APPLE
Apple further notes that the expected
delivery time of the new iPod Nano is six
weeks following receipt of the faulty unit,
though there have been some unconfirmed
reports across the web that users are
receiving confirmation emails which
suggest a quicker turnaround.

information.
Apple Names Arthur D. Levinson New Chairman,
Disney CEO Bob Iger Also Joins Board
Apple have named Arthur D. Levinson as
the company’s new Chairman of the Board, a
role previously filled by Steve Jobs. Levinson
has been on the board for some time, in
addition to serving as CEO for biotechnology
corporation Genetech. Speaking of the
appointment, Apple’s CEO Tim Cook said:
“Art has made enormous contributions
to Apple since he joined the board in 2000"
“He has been our longest serving co-
lead director, and his insight and leadership
are incredibly valuable to Apple, our
employees and our shareholders.”
In the same press release, Apple also
announced that Disney CEO Bob lIger

sees the two companies grow yet closer
together. Tim Cook said of Iger:
“Bob and | have gotten to know
one another very well over the past
few years and on behalf of the entire
board, we think he is going to make an
extraordinary adaition to our already
very strong board.”
“His strategic vision for Disney is
based on three fundamentals: generating
the best creative content possible,
fostering innovation anda utilizing the
latest technology, and expanding into
new markets around the world which
makes hima great fit for Apple.” @

One of the few mechanical features in
the device is its linear oscillating vibrator,

ENHANCEMENT
TOOLS IN
In my first article about the iOS 5
updates for Apple's iPhone camera, |
reviewed its latest features and how they
take the photo app closer to becoming a
point-and-shoot camera replacement. The
latest updates allow iPhone camera users
to launch the app from the locked Home
screen, snap photos using the volume-
up button, and compose shots using the
gridlines overlay.

In this review | focus on the post-
processing camera features of iOS 5.
Apple clearly understands that the
average iPhone camera user doesn’t
always have the time to process photos
in applications like Photoshop, or even
iPhoto. Most favorite smartphone camera
photos are shot and shared online, via
e-mail or text message. So in the recent iOS
update, Apple has added a few features
for cropping, rotating, and automatically
enhancing or correcting the exposure of
images from within the iPhone itself.

EDIT ONSCREEN
You can edit and enhance any photo in
your iPhone camera when you open one in
the Camera Roll or in any of your albums in
the Photo library app.
Also, | recently discovered that you can
quickly enter the Camera Roll of the iPhone
from within the Camera app itself by sliding
your finger first left to right on the screen,
instead of tapping the preview box on the
bottom-left of the camera. You can do this
before and after you snap a photo.
AUTO-ENHANCE TOOL
One of the first edits to make is a simple
auto exposure enhancement (the Magic
Wand icon) of the selected image. While
this simple feature is nowhere as good as
advanced photo editing software, it does
To pull up a picture from the Camera
Roll or a Photo Album, you simply tap the
Edit button and get instant access to the
four editing tools.
Note, however, when you make edits to
an image in your iPhone camera, you can’t
undo them after you tap the Save button.
You can of course tap the Cancel button
if you don't like an edit. So you might
consider copying an original photo before
making a major edit, such as cropping it.
attempt to brighten darker areas of an
image and subtly increase the contrast and
sharpness of a selected image. This feature
may also attempt to correct White Balance
issues.
However, Auto—Enhance can only
improve photos taken in adequately lit
areas. Unlike third-party iPhone camera
apps (such as Camera+ and CP Pro), this
feature does not allow for manual exposure
adjustments. So if an image is too dark or
slightly out of focus, Auto-Enhance can't be
of much help.
Cancel
CROP AND ROTATE
Another important feature is the
ability to crop and rotate a photo. This is
especially useful since the iPhone camera
doesn't have a zoom lens. If your subjects
in a photo seem too far away, simply tap
the Crop icon on the bottom- right of
the screen, and then use the handles to
remove distracting areas of the shot.
This cropping tool also includes the
gridlines overlay, related to the rule-
of-thirds in photo composition, which
basically means composing or cropping
your subject(s) in one of the four quartiles
of the grid.
Notice also the Constrain button in the
Crop tool. This allows you to crop a photo
to a specific dimension, especially for the
purposes of printing it. You may notice that
sometimes when you print a 4 x 6 photo,
an important part of it might get cut off.
Using Constrain, you can more precisely
crop your images for printing.
REMOVE RED-EYE
For those dreadful red-eye flash shots,
the automatic Remove Red-Eye tool might
just do the trick. Red eyes might appear
when you use the iPhone's flash. Tap the
red-eye delete icon and then tap each rea
eye to remove the color. Tap again to undo
the edit.
None of these editing tools, with
the exception of the cropping tool, is as
advanced as what you find in iPhoto. But
they work well for quickly editing and
sharing your iPhone camera shots with
family and friends.

THE GLOBAL ECONOMIC CRISIS...
DID TECH STOCKS
WEATHER THE STORM?
In 2008, a convergence of factors triggered what
many economists believe to be the worst economic
crisis since the Great Depression of the 1930’s. Years
of poor lending habits, particularly with home loans,
coupled with a collapse in the American banking
system, plummeted world economies into deep
recessions. By late 2008, leading world indexes dropped
more than 40% from their highs in early 2007, with
Japan’s Nikkei 225 falling a staggering 60%. The fallout
was swift and unrelenting as businesses closed, jobs
were shed and millions of homes were lost and the
crisis reverberated through sectors as diverse as utilities
(down over 20% from early 2007 to the beginning
of 2009"), transportation (slipping over 40% in that
Same period’) and financial (tumbling over 70% in that

period’). Tech stocks were not impervious, and indices
like the iShares Dow Jones US Technology Sector Index
Fund saw losses of over 40% in that time period.
It seemed that none of the major technology
companies were Impervious to the economic rut. Apple
Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) for example, saw a precipitous
drop in its share price in late August of 2008, tumbling
from over $170 a share to below $90 within a little
over a month. But the stock turned around rather
quickly, climbing to $120 by the end of the first quarter
of 2009. IBM (NYSE: IBM), similarly, skidded sharply
during the months of September and October 2008,
seeing shares that closed at the end of September at
over $120 a share sink to under $75 a share in mid-
November. It, too, began a quick recovery to pre-crisis
per share prices by the start of the second quarter of
2009. Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) dipped to $15 a share
in early 2009 from almost $30 in August of ’08, yet saw
shares rise in the second quarter of the following year.
The story was the same for other major technology
companies like Google (NASDAQ: GOOG), Intel
(NASDAQ: INTC) and Oracle (NASDAQ: ORCL): moderate
