We have about 165 kids from Kindergarten to 3rd grade. Four Apple ile’s make up our inventory of computer equipment. CONTENTS There is a fresh excitement at my school this year. We are one of the recipients of Oregon House Bill 2020 which guarantees special funds for Teachers’ Column staff development / school Notices improvement with an emphasis on Editor's Notes computer training. MEETINGS — Regular Membership The Regular Membership Meeting is held on the third Thursday of the month, with a start time of 7:00 p.m.. The meeting is held on the Chemeketa Community College campus, in Building 2, Room 113. The general public is invited to attend. MEETINGS - Board of Directors The Board of Directors Meeting is held on the first Thursday of the month, with a start time of 7:30 p.m. The meeting location will be announced at the prior Regular Memebership Meeting. (contunued from page 1) There will be fundraisers to purchase more equipment such as a PC Viewer, more computers, software, etc.. We are fortunate to have an extremely supportive PTO (Parent-Teacher Organiza- tion). | personally am collecting and searching for public domain software that will assist in meeting the needs of our children, especially our “at-risk-student™ population. If you have any terrific ideas, which | know you do, please share them for the benefit of our children. Kirk Gamble and | have gotten together this summer a few times to motivate each other and share ideas. Now we are experts (1 wish). Kirk really motivates me to dig in and learn all | can. He's a great friend and | sincerely appreciate him. Also, the editors, Chuck and Bobbi Kirk, have been over to our home and | have learned from them. A special thanks to them! HELPFUL HINT® If you enjoy being up-to-date and desire to know the latest ideas in the world of computer technology, sit down on Saturday mornings and watch “Computer Chronicles.” It is a half-hour program on Channel 10 at 10:30am. Very Interesting! ** Reading is the membership card of the human race!! One great way to help young children beginning to read and sound out words is by having them use word processing software such as Fr€dWriter (free public domain software). Let them experiment with the keyboard and make up various simple games for them. This will give them confidence as they learn to recognize more letters and the sounds they make. LIBRARIAN'S CORNER By John Moore HELP This past couple months has been a real rat-race. | was selling my house and that deal fell through because we couldn't come up with a valid title within the specified time limits. Then my computer went out and | fixed it. Then {| had troubles again and this time it was the drive of one of my duo-disk drives. So I'm using my single drive as a back-up and doing a lot of disk swapping. Anyway, | have a couple of items that | would like to get some help on. Does anyone out there have “TimeOut PowerPack” by Beagie Brothers? | would like to try the program out to see if it will solve some of our library cataloging problems. | would just need to borrow it for a week or so and you would have my undying gratitude. Another subject-- Does anyone have any unused (or unusable) Apple cards or peripheral devices? This could be a way of clearing your closet and helping someone else out. If you have something in surplus, or need something, let me know what your have and how much you want for it (please be a realist as noe of us are that rich) and I'll try to match people up. Even terminally inoperative devices can be used as a source of parts and we have a couple of members who are known to do a little repair work from time to time. And yet another-- In talking to other librarians, most of them have ldeas about re-organizing their collections in order to make them more available to the members. Towards this end, I'm working on our Print Shop compatible collection and arranging it into disks by catagories. currently, if you want to find a given figure, you have to wade through the entire catalog to find what you want. Do you have any ideas that would improve our library and make it more usable? Let me know. EDITOR'S NOTES By Bobbi Kirk | hope to see quite a few of you at the next meeting as several interesting and important matters will be taken care of. First we will be nominating officers of the club. Some of the “alder” members of the club are hoping to step down and take a slightly less active role in running the club so it would be a good idea for some of our new members to consider running for some of the offices. The Vice-President and Secretary arent too hard and don't require lot of computer expertise.
