With some epplications, notably AppleWarks GS, you cen select several doouments in the Finder, open them ail at once (by selecting “Open* from the File menu ar double-olidking on eny one of them), end they will all be loaded when the application is run. Good questioal Using the options available in the Finda’s menus, all you can do is “Select All” ‘When you pick this option, every icon in the currently active window will be selected. If there are no windows open, all of the igons on the desktop will be selected. ‘While this all or nothing approach has its uses, selecting icais with the mouse is much mare flexible. To select a single icon with the mouse, you simply more the pointer on top of the icon end ofidk the mouse button ace. When sdected, the colors in the icon will invert (black will become white end everything else will became black) so thet you can teil the loon Is selected. Sdecting multiple icous ‘with the mouse is anly slightly more oonoples. (Note that when you select multiple loons, they must all be in the same window, or they must all be on the deskiop.) The first way to do this 3 called shift-clicking. All this mens bs that you hdd down either of the <shift> keys while licking the mouse on each icon you went to sdect. As long 4s you hdd down the <sbift> key, each icon you click an will be added to the set of selected icons. H-yau let up an the <shifi> key and then select an joan, that loon will be selected but all of the other joons will be deselected. The second way to ‘select multiple loons {s to “drew” a box around them with the mouse. To do this, simply dick the mouse somewhere in the window (or on the desktop) that there isn't en icon and, while heiding down the mouse button, move the muse towerds the ioons you wish to select. Moving the mouse while hdding down the Mouse button Is known os dragging. As you drag the mouse, you will see a box fam. Que amet of this box will be anchored at the spot you criginally dicleed the mouse. Now all you have to dois continue dragging the mause until the bax encioses all of the icans you want to sdect. When it does, release the mouse button end all of the icons in the box will be selected While both of these methods offer a great deal of flexibility, it 1s still possible to acddentally sedect en icon that you didn't went. But, this too is a simple thing to fix. To deselect ‘unwanted loons, simply hoki down the <shift> key and click on the offending icon. Rt will be desdected withaut aflecting the rest of your Sdlected icons. To deselect all selected icons, just click the mouse on « spot where there ae no icons. Now thet we knor how to select iccas, let's talk about some of the things you can do to them A File By Any Other Name... One of the most useful things you can do toa selected icon is rename it. To rename an ican, deselect eny ioons you might already have sdected end select the joan you went to teneme. Then, simply type the new name for the ican. H you make a misteke, you cen use the stendard editing keys (arrows, delete, etc.) to fix it. When you here the file name the wey You went, press the <retum> key and the fle will be renamed. Note that except for disk loons, loons on the desktop ¢.e. not in 4 window) can not be renamed To Teneme en joan that is on the desktap, you Taust first select it and then use the "Put Away” optian in the File menu to return it toits appropriate window. Copying Things Another handy feature of the Finder is its ability to copy files end disks. Thisis especially true when you consider that the Finda is the only program curently available (that I know of) that can copy files that have Resource Forks. [Rditar's note - this ertide was written right after System Software v6.0 came aut. There are low severel utilities thet can copy ‘Resource Forks (Wings, ProSdl 10, etc.) Unfortunedely, Copy I+ is stil not ae of them.) A Resource Fork is a partion of a file that canteins commanty used items such as menus, window definitions, text, etc. Other copy programs will simply ignore the Besouroe Fork (not good!) when maldng a copy or they willl just stop dead in their acks and refuse to even try to copy the fle (Copy I+ version 9 is ane such program). ‘To copy a file or files with the Finder, smoply select the icon(s) of the file(s) in questiqn, click the mouse button on the newly sctected icon(s) and drag the icon(s) until it is over the window or disk that you ‘Went it (them) tobe copiedta you ae copying files to a disk, the disk icon will tum black when the mouse pointer is on top of it. Then, you simply let go of the mouse button and the files are copied. Note thet if you try to copy files to the same dik that they are already on, the files will be moved, not copied. If you want to have mare then one copy of a fe on a disk, select the files’ icon end then pick the Duplicate..." option from the File menu. This will meke a copy of the file in the seme window. You cen then move the cqpy to emother window on the disk Copying disks is done in nuich the seme way. You simply select the icon of the disk you went to copy and drag it on top of the joon of the disix you want to copy it ta. In either case, the Finder has several different options that you can use to aflect how files end disks ere copied. The Finder will autamatically present you with these options when eppropriate, or you can access them ahead of time by hdding down the <option> key befare yau begin dragging the icons to the target ‘window or disk. These options ere fairly self explanatory, so Ill let you explore them an your own. pc Biy One of the last truly usefil things you can do to foons with the mouse, Is to delete them. Todo this, simply select the loons of the files you want to Kill end dreg them over to the icon of the Tresh can. The Trash cen loon will turn black ‘whea the mouse pointer is. on top of it. At this point, release the mouse button. All of the Sdected flea will be removed from the window they were in and the Trash can will ‘bulge’ to show that there are files in it thet ere waiting to be deleted At this pomt, you can do one of several things: 1) F you went to get rid of the files immediately, siraply select the “Empty Trash" option from the Special menu and the files will be physically removed from the disk. You won't be able to Get them back. 2) You can get the files out of the Trash by opening the Tresh oan ion (by double-didking an it}, selecting the loons of the files thet you went to get beck, and then choosing the ‘Put Array” option from the File meau. This will retum the loons to the window that they odginally came from. They will not be ddeted 3) Ignare the silly thing. I you mow that you went to get rid of the files in the ‘Trash, but you dant went to be bothered with actually moving the mause or typing Open-Apple-T, the Finder will eventually delete whatever is im the Trash. Over the course of a few yeers, this feature, combined with a Programmable TV remote contral can Gase you to gain ebout 26 Ibs. Another thing you can drag into the ‘Trash is diskettes. When you drag a disk icon into the Trash, the Finder doses all of the open windows associated with the disk and ejects the disk fram the drive. The disk’s loon is also removed from the desktop. Nothing is deleted This is simply a way to get the disk out of the drive and clean up the desktop. Hf the disk is 6 6.25" disk, its windows are stil closed and the icon is still removed fram the desktap, but you have to physically remove the disk from the drive yourself This is different from the “Rect” menu commend. ‘When you use ‘Bject," all of the disks’ windows and its ion remain on the desktop. ‘They are simply shaded to indicate that the disk is not currently In any drive. It's aso Impartant to note that you cen not dreg a hard disk or RAM disk icon into the trash. The Final Chepter Wail, thet should be quite enough to hoki you for a while.
