I think I have been at member since about 1987. I brought a lot of software through them because the price was right and I liked the idea of supporting an Apple II decidated company/ club. They showed a lot of class by giving their members warning about their closing at the end of the year. They even listed the price so that users can be be paid up to their last issue and not be stuck with an unused subscription. It is very typical of their honest approach to treating their members. Those who are not members might want to join for the last year. Before ‘we get to our first letter this moath, let me remind you of the goals of this column: (1) Have fun using your Apple II. (2) Learn more so you can have fun using your Apple Il (3) Solve frustrations s0 you can have fun using your Apple I. (4) Have fun reading this column. I hope a pattern is starting to emerge here. On to our first question DEAR DR. KEN: ‘What IS a bad disk error? Is it a formatting error, a write or delete error or is it something inherently wrong with either the physical disk or the magnetic field laid on it? - - Fuzzy on Formatting. DEAR FUZZY: Yes. Next question Sorry, I couldn't resist. Y'see, a diskette is nothing more than a Platter of magnetic stuff Information cannot be stored on it until the magnetic stuff has a reproducible pattem applied to it, so that your Apple can find the information you read and wrote on it. So, Apple's programming gang designed a standard pattern of Sectors, Tracks, Nibbles, and Fooframs, and every Program expects your disk to contain them. (Ok, so I lied about the Fooframs | If a mistake occurs in the formatting, OR in any operation that changes the disk (like writing or deleting), OR the magnetic stuff gets scratched, greasy, or chocolatey. the pattem oa the magnetic stuff can be disrupted Usually, this just occurs in one Spot on the disk. and most of the disk is OK but when the Apple looks on that one spot, or attempts to reuse that spot -- it gets confused and reports "/O Error’ or "Bad Block error’ or etc etc. etc. The cause is relevant, because the cure is the same: (1) Thank goodness you have a backup. [You don't have a backup? SHAME ON YOU!| (2) Salvage what you can from the disk. (3) If it's a floppy, reformat it or throw it away, if it's a hard drive, get a utility like ProSel 16 or Deliverance and let it mark the bad spot to keep it from being used again. DEAR DR. KEN: | just love your three Reliefware games for the GS: OneAnn Battie, Pluderi, and Milestones 2000. I play them all the time. I tall all my friends about them. I remind everyone to send in their fee. How did you ever create the amazing graphics that you use in these programs? - - Anonymous DEAR ANONYMOUS: Lalways appreciate these unsolicited testimonials. ‘Thanks, Mom. [ create all my graphics using a GS paint program: usually @ mixture of Platinum Paint, PaintWorks Gold and Deluxe Paint II (since each of the three bas some neat features) I spend most of my time in Plantinum Paint. Theo, I paint all of the —— background black and save the files as unpacked screen images {That's file type $CO for all you hackers out there.) Next, I create a database of the images in Appleworks GS, noting which screen file they're in, and the coardinates of the box that just barely surrounds them. I save this as an ASCI text fle. Finally. I have an ORCA/Pascal program that reads the database, ‘opens each screen file, and (like a cookie cutter) “cuts each image Each image is then compressed and tumed into a custom “image” resource, and the database itself is tumed into a custom ‘table’ resource. {For those of you with Genesys, the images are type SOBA6 and the table is type $0BA7) This method has two advantages first, if I change an image, I doa't have to rewrite the ‘whole program; and second, it keeps the images and program in one file (along with the sounds) DEAR DR. KEN: Tve read reviews on HyperStudio and HyparCard UGS and ‘Scripting is mentioned. What is scripting? - - HyperCurious DEAR HYPERCURIOUS: Both Hyper-products are easy to use because you can add objects such a3 backgrounds, buttons, fields of text, pictures, sounds and Fooframs. (Oops! There I go again - sorry] without writing any Programs. You can create interesting and complex stacks of information by just selecting options from menus and dialog baxes. ‘However, Apple users are well known for testing limits. What if you wanted a button that played a sound, then moved to a different card, then typed ‘Good Moming’ if the time was before noon, "Good Afternoon" if it was noon to §, and ‘Good Evening" otherwise? A program that was able to understand those commands would run on a brain, not a computer Enter scripting Every object in HyperCard IGS and HyperStudio has an associated script; if you choose the easy options, the script is written for you, [For example. On MouseUp - Go To Hame Stack - End MouseUp.] However, when you get crazy, you can modify the script to do many things, and indude IF statements, and calculations, and even - yes, even Fooframs!
